I'm Currently Feeling:

Councils shutting down our rural primary schools.

Hi All,

It was announced on Monday that the Isle of Wight council will be shutting down at least 23 primary schools here.

My family are absoulutely devastated as my son and daughter go to one of the schools that is proposed to shut under all three options that the council are deciding upon. We are fighting it now, but it is going to be a long and tiresome road, and there are no guarantees that we will succeed in changing there minds. The conservative council here did promise us that our primary schools would be safe under the leadership, but they lied to us and now this has happened.

I was just wondering if anyone else has been through or is going through a similar thing, and if anyone has any ideas or tips for campaigning against the destructions of our schools and communities.

Kind regards,

Shim.

Aberdeen is in the same position as well. The council overspent by millions on their budget and now loads of schools will be merged. They say it is to streamline the service and to close undersubscribed schools. But as usual, under all the propoganda, it is just a cost cutting exercise and probaby won't benefit the kids in the long run.

I totally agree with what you are saying about campaigning. You should probably put around a local petition and get on to local councillors and MP for input. You could also speak to the local teachers to get them on board (as closing schools will mean a job reshuffle for them as well).

Part of the charm and appeal of small country school is that it feels a nice, small community for the children to grow up in - and it is part of tradition in certain areas. It is a shame to close them.

They are doing the same thing in my county. Closing lots of primary schools (not just the rural ones) and building super schools in certain areas, which will mean a lot of travelling for parents and a lot of upheaval for everyone.

The opposite is happening here, the old schools are getting pulled down and new ones built. in teh past 4 years 3 schools have been replaced and 1 new one built.

But closing down schools isnt good, definatley campaign.
