Will someone tell me how our ancestors survived childhood?!!!

Check out these old ads for home remedies that my paramedic husband sent me!!
Lloyd Cocaine Toothache Drops
In the US, cocaine was sold over the counter until 1914 and was commonly found in products like toothache drops, dandruff remedies and medicinal tonics.
Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup
Contained 65 mg of morphine per fluid ounce. "For children teething."

I wonder how many unexplained childhood deaths were due to these fabulous remedies?
It does make one pause and wonder if we will someday be thinking the same thing about baby aceteminophen suspensions or other cold remedies for children that we use today?

It's scary isn't it! I don't use cold remedies, adult or children so at least I don't need to worry too much! lol Nothing wrong with a bit of laudanum in the bottle...

Maybe I shouldn't knock them. I bet the morphine syrup for teething worked a treat!

Crazy, the stuff they used to sell to the public. I remember learning in a "drugs and behaviour" class that heroin used to be sold by the Bayer (sp?) drug company in the 1800's I believe, they later stopped selling it once they realized how addictive it was.

Also an interesting side note, Morphine is very simillar to heroin, but has a an added component that makes it cross the blood brain barrier more easily, sooo if your allergic to morphine, you probably want to stay away from the heroin as well

Morphine is some good stuff... I felt fantastic immediately after my c-section, can't say the feeling lasted for long at all though once they took me off the drip though unfortunately! It sucks, you go from feeling great to feeling like shit in a very short period of time!
