Which is it?

Britain or Great Britain or England?

British or English?

Can anyone explain to me what the difference is, if any? And when to use which? lol.

Great Britian is made up of of 4 countries that are technically separate

England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales.

But for some reason i dont know at this time of the morning they are classed as one country called Great Britian

Some people refer the themselves as British, some English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh etc

Personally i say im English as im from England

More accurate is actually "The UK" - which is short for "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Great Britain refers to the main island itself (Scotland, England & Wales). It's worth remembering that only Northern Ireland is part of the UK, southern Ireland (Eire) is independent.

In general, I refer to myself as Scottish, as that's where I'm from If you're not sure whether someone is from Scotland, England, N. Ireland or Wales, then you are technically correct to say "British", though they might still specify one country or the other to you in response . The thing that tends to put people's backs up (in Wales, Scotland & N. Ireland) is people using "England" to refer to the whole of the UK, or "English" to describe anyone from the UK.

Just to explain that last thing a bit - for a lot of Scottish people in particular (not me, I might add ), calling a Scottish person "English" would be like calling a Canadian "American" and saying "Well it's almost the same, the countries are right next to each other, right?!" That's how I explained it to my schoolkids in Quebec anyway

I think if you say you are british it implies that you are from all four of the places, hence why i dont think many people who live here say that, they refer to where they are actually from
