can anyone recommend their make of vacuum cleaner and also tumble dryer?

with the vacuum cleaner i have a tiled house ( bloody middle east houses) and we have one big carpet in the lounge about 3.5 m X 3 m. so i need something mainly for the carpet? any recommendations?

upright vacuum or not?
bags or not?
wet and dry or not?
anyone have experience cleaning a carpet with one of those static brooms? (heard they are rubbish)

I love my 'henry' hoover...

Actually that may be overstating it as I can't stand hoovering, but it's a great vacuum cleaner, it was pretty cheap compared to all the others available and has great suction. A lot of cleaners use it apparently.

I don't know whether you'll get one in the middle east though?

I bought a Dyson two years ago (one that goes carpet to hard floors) and I am not very happy with it. It is heavy and needs to be cleaned too often.
My mum has just bought a wet and dry one and she loves it.

i know! i cant believe how expensive they are here
i think its coz ppl dont have fully carpeted homes so the demand for vacuums is def lower than other countries

We have a Bissel 'Powerforce' bagless upright. It's a pretty basic vacuum, cost about $75CD at Wal-Mart, and does the trick very nicely. Our apartment is carpeted throughout with tile in the bathroom, storage room and kitchen and it goes from one surface to another without issue.

We've got three cats and a dog, and this vacuum is powerful enough to pick up ALL the hair on the carpet easily. I love that it's bagless, because it's very easy to clean and there are no bags to buy. The filters are washable, the vacuum itself is fairly light and it picks up things my mother-in-law's vacuum (which we borrowed for two weeks after moving here) didn't even begin to pick up.
