how to stop baby clamping on my nipple

hey ladies i have been breastfeeding for a little over 2 weeks now and i have had to use a breast shield full time as little one clamps down and my nipple and they become really sore. I really dont want to have to use them everytime i feed and I have tried all different positions but he still clamps down is there anything I can do to possibly help the situation so that I can bf without the shield?

It is so so painful! I used the nipple shield for just over a week and I think that has helped I haven't use it in 3 days and he seems to not be doing it as much he just starts to do it towards the end of my breast emptying but I think that's more out of frustration. Good luck ladies I am hoping mine sticks!

Keep a close eye as he feeds. If he's latched and actively nursing, his tongue will cover his gums, so to clamp down he has to move back a little first. If you see that happen, get a finger in and unlatch him. If he wants more you can try again (on the other side if you think the first is done with.) It's a pain, but the phases usually don't last too long. It sounds like he's improving now anyway!

My DD clamped down and had a really strong suck. I used nipple shields but still had pain, vasospasm, blocked ducts, bleeding etc. At 7 weeks when things still hadn't improved I took my DD to a cranial osteopath and after jus one session her feeding was so much better. I'm sure it relieved some tension in her jaw or something. It took 4c sessions in all but we are still feeding now at 8 months. Maybe worth a try if nothing else helps. Good luck.
