4oz is a decent amount... You shouldn't do it until it hurts though. Basically just try and pump to mimick what your baby is like nursing.

4 oz is a good haul!! I've been pumping for weeks and rarely get 4oz plus and only in a morning.

The problem with pumping is that its a poor mimic of the baby's suck. So you're right that there is loads more in the boob after it stops coming out for the pump.

Pumping first thing in the morning will get you the most (usually) and I've stopped pumping after lunchtime as I only get 1 oz and its not worth the hassle of the steriliser etc.

The pump doesnt get your body to 'let down' the milk so I personally find pumping while feeding tricks my boobs in to letting down. Pumping while feeding is a bit tricky but I find I get the best results that way. Also an electric pump is a god send

I agree with Lisa - electric isthe way to go! I used to have a manual pump and struggled. Got my electric one the other day and the difference is just amazing!

I agree with the other ladies - 4 oz. is not bad at all, but really you shouldn't do it until you are sore and red. I pump frequently (about every 3 hours or so) - but like the other ladies I use an electric which really helps. The morning is the best time to pump as Lisa said, you have the most milk then. Try and look at your baby or a picture of him while you pump it assists with the letting down of the milk. I also like to sit very quietly in a somewhat dim room and breathe deeply - the more relaxed you are the more milk will flow!! I've build up to about 7 oz in the mornings, and manage a full extra bottle for her each day Hope this helps

This is soooo true...when I pump I stare at Hebe and it flows great - if I look at the pump too long checking how its going, it slows right down or stops altogether!!! Its mad but true!!

I find thinking about Jasper, or looking at him helped my boobies to relax and I guess trick them into feeding baby mode... I think pumping while feeding is a fabulous idea and I might give it a go myself, even though it sounds tricky, as the opposite boob tends to leak while I'm feeding.
