Latching on..?

I had really bad problems when I first started breastfeeding lets just say I had mastitus in both sides (quite rare- my GP had never seen such bad mastitus!) and ended up having to almost relactate which took 2 weeks as my milk got sooo low. Even the HV couldnt believe I was still bfeeding! However, 5 weeks on and its all starting to get into a good supply demand now which is such a relief but I noticed that sometimes he is latching on almost himself and although his mouth is the right shape he doesnt have loads of boob and his mouth isnt hugely wide open - no discomfort whatsoever though and boobs are all drained ok ( I am paranoid about this and check for red patches everyday as I am terrified of getting mastitus again!) - anyone else find their LOs do this?

Also do your LOs sometimes pull off quite a few times in a feed still?

Oliver sometimes has a good mouthful and sometimes just a bit. As long as my whole nipple and a portion of the areola is in his mouth, it is ok.
He also comes off the boobs sometimes. It is either a high flow that makes him take a second to catch his breath, or he just doesn't want to be missing anything around. Or alternitively, it's because my dippy husband has just blown his nose, really loudly, right by us!! Clever!

I've got 'long' nips so Hebe doesnt always get a good gob full Like Claire says if you're not sore just go with it!! x

I understand you being worried but if you have no pain and he is giving you wet and dirty nappies, gaining weight okay and is content between feeds, you can't be doing much wrong!

Poppy does a similar thing when she latches herself on. I was saying in another thread that she sucks the nipple in like a strand of spaghetti so is definitely not latching on in the traditional "wait for a wide mouth and throw in the nipple" kind of way. But she seems quite hapy to me! x
