Storing freshly expressed breast milk along with chilled.

Hi all

Can any of you answer my question?

I have been using breast shells everytime I have fed Poppy over the last 24 hours (highly recommended, by the way - a great way to gather milk without having to pump too soon) and each time I have harvested some more, I have added it to a sterilised bottle in the fridge and have got around 3 ounces so far .

I am just wondering whether this is okay to be adding freshly expressed milk to milk which I have been chilling in the fridge. Should I be storing each batch in seperate containers and then mix it up later when DH wants to fee her? Or maybe I should be waiting for the freshly expressed stuff to come up to room temperature before adding it to the chilled milk?

I am confused

Thanks all. x

Hi
Sorry not sure of the answer to your question, but what are breast shells?

They are these little round plastic containers that you slip into your bra while you are feeding and if you are prone to leakage (as I am) they collect the milk that leaks from the other breast. I think they are really useful as I don't want to pump just yet.

Hiya,

I only mixed my milk together once it had all chilled, but I used to express large amounts rather than collecting small amounts from using a breast shell. I would empty your milk from your breast shells into pre-sterilised bottles or breast milk storage bag - I have read mixed messages, the official way is not to mix it because it can make the milk prone to bacteria (because the new milk is warm), though people who have mixed have said their children have had no ill effects.

It is confusing though!

Thanks for your reply. Another question, I sterilised the bottle first and have been using this to store the milk in. Is that okay? Or do I need to decant into another freshly sterilised bottle before we give the milk to baby? I find the whole sterilising this really confusing!

Thanks. I know it says you can use them when you are feeding but are they discreet enough to wear throughout the day? It's just that I leak quite a lot and it seems such a waste and I wondered if you can wear these in the day and collect any milk leakage that occurs. Obviously it would need to be put ina bottle and refridgerated quickly.

I am also really confused re the sterilising. I tend to express into a sterilised expressing bottle and decant into a newly sterilised feeding bottle to feed.

It was reccomended to me to chill the new milk before adding to the already chilled milk so that the temperature doesn't become unsafe too many times... kinda like when adults get food poisining... it can be caused by the same sort of thing.

Say you buy a pizza and eat a bit... It gets cold on the counter and you decide you want another slice so you heat the whole thing. You eat your newly heated slice and put the rest in the fridge overnight. Next morning you want some more and warm it all up all over again then leave the last slice to cool on the counter. That last slice is likely going to make someone get at bare minimum an upset tummy because everytime it is heated and cooled it gives that bacteria a chance to grow just a little bit more till it reaches a point that someone gets sick.

No, I don't really think you could wear them during the day. Well, if you did you may look a wee bit odd as they are quite bulky! I find that I only really leak when I am feeding anyway.

The sterilising thing is dead confusing, isn't it? I think I will get some of those little baggies to store the milk in the fridge/freezer. I can't be bothered with all the faffing about. I had bought a microwave steriliser but have just found out that things only stay sterile for 3 hours so I am just storing my breast shells in a cold steriliser and fishing them out as and when I need them!

Yes, I suppose this makes sense. I am going to have to buy some of those sterile baggies to store it until I mix it all up prior to feeding.
