Expressed Milk Question....

If my baby doesn't drink all the milk from her bottle.

Can I save the rest for later or discard it?

I asked this because, "Can/Powered Formulas" say discard after use of 1 hour.

I was thinking the same applied for breast milk.

Discard or refrigerate.

Thanks,
Mello

I thought that you could keep breast milk? (I dont express much so I'm not positive) But I'm pretty sure I read that you can give a baby milk, and reuse the same bottle with breast milk. Here we go, I looked it up:

Breastmilk can safely stand at room temperature for 6 to 8 hours and need not be discarded if the first feeding attempt is incomplete. In contrast, formula must be refrigerated and discarded after the first feeding attempt because it contains no antibodies or infection protection factors.

You can buy bags and freeze breastmilk for future use

With formula, we have some 200ml ready to use aptamil and rather than use 90ml and waste the rest, our midwife said we could put half and half into 2 bottles and use when and as required

It makes sense.

I don't want to waste nothing, after all that pumping.

Thanks,
Mello

I think it's ok if you're expressing it and just leaving it out that day for use - if it's been refrigerated or frozen, then warmed up and allowed to cool down I don't think it's safe to put it back in the fridge and warm it up again later. It's the warming/cooling that can't be done more than once, as warming it up to the temperature your baby will drink it at creates the perfect environment for bacteria - which aren't killed by putting it in the fridge/freezer (their growth is just slowed or stopped), so warming it up again would allow them to multiply even more x
