Lactation consultants, help please.......

I am breast feeding, but plan on having a few drinks tomorrow night. I will be pumping bottles for my LO tonight and all day tomorrow so he won't get any bad milk. If I have two drinks (like a pina colada or margarita), how long should I pump and dump? I probably won't get home until 11:00 pm ar 12:00 am so I will have a lot to pump at that time, but I will need to get rid of more milk early Saturday morning. More than likely we will be having dinner by 6:00 so I will probably have my drinks then. What would you recommend? I just want to be fully prepared. Peyton usually eats around 5:00 am or 6;00 am on the weekends, would my milk be safe then or should I wait to feed him again by breat until 8:00 or 9:00 am? Any advice would be much appreciated. This will be my first time having a "much needed" drink. And don't worry, Peyton is going to my mother in laws house and she will be very sober while she watches him (just in case you wondered).

Tbh, if you're only having a couple early in the evening you shouldn't need to pump and dump anything. The body gets rid of one unit of alcohol per hour (on average) so if you have 4 units at 6pm you should be fine by 11pm. The milk doesn't sit in the breast at this stage, but is produced as your baby feeds so once the alcohol is gone from the blood, it's gone from the milk.

I didn't know this. I think I will pump and dump anyways just to be really sure (I'm super paranoid). My LO is trying to get over a cold and I don't want to make anything worse for him. I'm sure I will feel pretty loopy off one drink anyways since it's been so long.

Thanks for replying, I never knew that. I thought that if you drank alcohol (no matter how much), that you would have to pump and dump so baby isn't affected. Good to know, thanks.

I beleive it may be Margerle who has said this before, but it's the motto I follow: If you are sober enough to drive you are sober enough to bf. I would think you could easily have 2-3 drinks over the course of a night, with food, and be okay. I only pump and dump when I go out and get really schnokered, which is rare.

Oh good! I was starting to get worried. We have been to two weddings where I had 1 glass of wine and still bf.

I'd pump the extra when I got home and store it for another time out.

Yah if your sober enough to drive, your sober enough to breastfeed.

Have a nice time hun!

When the alcohol is out of your system (blood), it is also out of the breastmilk, so there is no reason to pump & dump (in other words, if you are pumping and dumping after it's out of your system - 2-3hours - you are just dumping perfectly good milk).

If you are just pumping for your own comfort, of course that is all good.

Have fun!
