giving a dummy when breastfeeding

Has anyone given a dummy to your baby when you are just breastfeeding? Did you find that it effects the breastfeeding?

I managed to make it close to a month before giving a dummy with my first. But this one is 3 weeks and I broke down earlier in the week and got her one. It doesn't really effect bfing as far as nipple confusion since they aren't getting food from it. it's not like a bottle. The only risk you run is that you need to make sure you milk supply is up and you are clear about when baby is hungry and when they are just wanting to suckle (if you give a dummy before your milk supply is up they are obviously nursing less and then your body will make less milk). You have to keep in mind that the first few weeks baby may need to eat every 1-2 hours, so if you are thinking of doing it to extend time between feeds, just make sure baby is getting enough by counting those wet nappies.

I waited a month before giving my LO one. Love them,, and grateful for them

Affected her latch a bit in the begining, but I just kept switching brands til we found one that worked.

When i was breastfeeding i introduced a dummy at about 3weeks...my LO loved it...so much that i had to take it off him! Lol...the only problem i found was that because my LO was such a sucky babe he never winged for a feed and as breastfeeding is done on a supply and demand basis i found this difficult...as he was happy as long as he was sucking anything...but apart from that no probs xx

Im just asking because my little one seems to want feeding every hour and he is feeding 15/20 minutes at a time but sometimes he just has a few sucks then sleeps. I just wondered whether this was because he just needed something in his mouth. Ive got some small tommy tippee dummies with the really small teat on it and he has a few sucks then spits it out lol so I dunno. I dont really want to give him one. Ill just see how he goes I guess
