Breat Pumps - Advice pls.

Hi Ladies

I wonder if any breastfeeding ladies could give me some practical advice on what to look for in a breast pump?

Is manual or electric better?? Does anyone have any specific brand recommendations??

All info greatfully received!!!

ive got a manual which ive tested out already feels so weird lol but ive read that if you plan to use it often then a electric one is better.
i dont think it matters about brand..i wouldnt pay £80 odd for one thats for sure lol

Have you breast fed before Moomin?? I did with my last but I didnt ever express I just did it all myself.

Depends on your usage.

Manual ones are $20 or less, electric ones are hundreds of dollars

If it's for the occasional express to go out, stick with a manual - if it's to pump daily, or several times daily, it might be a better investment to get an electric.

Careful pumping right after birth as this can very well effect your output and ability to breastfeed for very long.

Nope this is my first baby but i read its best to try them out to make sure they fit lol Im nervous about breast feeding but want to give him the best start and got a bump so OH can feed him too lol

Also you can freeze breastmilk for up to 3 months i think and store it in a fridge for 24 hours so its easier then and when breastfeeding use the pump on the other side so you get more milk out...and its a good way to be able to go out so my mum can baby sit hahah

Its not really an issue of cost. I dont mind paying for an electric one if people recommend them.

I think it will be for once a day max. I was thinking so I could leave a feed if I needed to or wanted to take one out with me for some reason.

I have breast fed before and I never expressed - I think I'd like to carry on for longer this time and hoped that the freedom to express may encourage me....dont know what your thoughts are....

Thanks for that link Margerle. It makes sense. I cant see me wanting to be pumping so soon - certainly not before 4-6 weeks. I dont need to - obviously some mum's may have to.

I really want to stick at it this time. I gave in after about 9 weeks last time so I want everything I can to stop that from happening.

IMO if you go for electric Medela are best. They seem to manufacture with
Mum's comfort and ease of use in mind, asopposed to most other brands who try to fit into a bottle-feeding system.

I always got more milk with my Medela than my previous pump which was from a bottle manufacturer.

Well, I rented an electric pump for the first two weeks. This helped as I was pumping after every feed at first then switched to only in the day. Then I bought a Medela manual pump. It cost around $70 at Wal-Mart. It works great. I don;t have to be close to an electrical outlet and can pump at my own pace. I only pumo now a few times a day. Soon I'll only pump if I need to have a bottle for outings.

This system seems to work great for me...hopefully you will find out what works best for you soon!
