When will my milk come in?

Kieran is 4 days old now and my milk still hasn't come in, I thought it would have by now?

I've been breastfeeding him on demand which is pretty much all the time atm so I thought my milk would have come in by now

Also, once my milk has come in will he stop feeding so often? He always seems to be on my breast at the moment and im finding it really hard because I can't get things done or sleep

Have you got colostrum? How long is he feeding for?

4 days is not unusually long. Mine came in at nearly 5 days.

Once your milk is in, it's no that he will feed less so much, but will probably establish more of a pattern. I certainoy found it much easier once my milk had turned up.

Pay good attention to your positioning and latch.....that will mean that your supply will come in at good levels, and he'll get a good feed each time....giving you possibly a bit longer till the next feed.

Thanks I've got colostrum, I can see it when he finishes a feeding so I know he's definately getting something.

He feeds anything between 15-30 mins on one side but will sometimes want feeding again straight away so I put him on the other side for roughly 15mins when he will come off himself.

Hopefully my milk will come in soon then

Sam used to feed for hours at a time at first...felt like I was permanently attached to the sofa! It does get easier when your milk comes in though - I think it was on day 4 or 5 that mine came in - fills them up so much quicker than colostrum! x

Because you are feeding on demand you may not notice a HUGE reaction when your milk does come in. No, 4 days isn't too long, it's usually 3-7 days... However long it takes for the progesterone level to decrease enuogh to let the prolactin take over and make milk.

No he will probably feed just as often in the beginning. For the next 4 to six weeks baby will go through several growth spurts, so many that it might seem like one long one. hang in there, sleep when baby sleeps, and know that in a months time baby will have made a routine and might eat only every 2-4 hours between naps.

You're doing great!
