I think it would be very very rare to be challenged in public for BFing. The worst you might get is a comment or a dirty look. Here in the states not every state protects BFing mothers. Which is a shame but each state has their own laws.

I'm in NY in the US and the law here not only protects breast feeding, but I'm allowed to be topless any place a male is allowed to go topless. So, if I was outside in a park and someone challenged me, I'd strip to the waist -LOL
To be fair, I'm in a very pro breastfeeding area and so I've never been challenged and doubt anyone would look twice to see me feeding Gabriel. I feed in restaurants all the time. (Sadly, can't be topless in a restaurant)

Never, ever, did I get negative comments. The only comments I had were positive ones.

Having said that, I did always make sure I wasn't in a position where anyone could be "offended" e.g if I was in a restaurant I would have my husband sit somewhere that blocked any direct view. I would choose a table somewhere discreet if possible and tried (but sometimes failed!!) to make sure any flash of nipple or boob was minimal.

Of course there are laws to protect you etc etc, but it is also about being mindful of those around you. Some people will find it distasteful or will feel uncomfortable and I think when BFing in public you do have to have a wee bit of respect for others (even if their views seem wrong to you) Not only that, by taking a few simple precautions you can avoid the potential unpleasantness of someone making snidey comments or staring at you.

If you are out and about in shopping malls etc, many of them have separate feeding rooms which have comfy chairs in them. Keep your eyes peeled for mothercare as theirs are usually quite good too.

I've fed Jack in the Tesco cafe, at shopping malls, baby groups, in the swimming pool change rooms, restaurants, car parks and at the airport. Since I've been visiting my family in Texas this past week, I think I've fed him every time we've gone out (anywhere is so far away from their home, "nipping out" takes a whole morning or afternoon, it seems) in restaurants, in the car, in shops. Of course, I had to feed him a few times on the 10 hour flight over here. I've never had a snide comment, but like some of the other girls I think I'm oblivious, as I'm focussing on my baby. However, should some ignorant comment come my way, I'll be happy to educate the person!

i feed anywhere these days lol i had him lying on the table at a resturant caus we were sat in a booth and there wasnt room between me and the table to hold him to nurse lol

Boots have a policy that you have to be shown the BF /baby room if you ask for it and if there isnt one and you want privacy you are to be shown to the managers office or provided with a chair and allowed to nurse anywhere in the store without being hassled by public or staff,

Scotland as a specific law stopping them from doing this in the UK they are breaking the sex discrimination act if they ask you to stop. I feed everywhere.
