Bad night

Hi gals,

baby has stopped latching she just will not suck the nipple in. Breasts are so heavy and sore having to express and bottle feed feel like such a failure.

Looks like baby will have to be bottle fed my breasmill till that stops and move to formula.

Loopy

If your breasts are very full, it may be difficult for her to latch on. Have you tried expressing a small amount so they're a bit softer, then trying to latch her on?

You don't say how old she is? Is it still very early days? If so, it's a learning curve for both of you and might take some perseverance on your part to 'teach' her how to do it.

Keep trying and in between, if you're still having probs, try cup feeding her as if you bottle feed, you risk her getting used to that which will make taking the nipple even harder.

As suggested it may be that your breasts are too full for her to latch on so try expressing a little before latching. I would also strongly advise you to get a BF consultant out to help with your latch

She is 8 days old and has a concave bit in the roof of her mouth so latching was always going to be hard just tried latching after partial expression and she just does not suck the nipple she just sits there with nipple in mouth and the starts screaming.

Bf expert showed me how to squuze breast into her mouth but that does not work anymore. She has gone from 15 feeds on nipple a day down to none? I can only think she prefers the bottle with her mouth thing also she has had 4 dirty and 2 wet nappies in 48 hours so I wondered if she was just not getting enough from by breasts or quick enough?

spoke to lactation woman today and she agrees might be combination of slow milk flow and concave top to roof of mouth that is causing the problems combined with lazyness now she has had a bottle that are the issue. Only advice for next few days is to keep going has i have been and look to express and feed baby 800ml over a 24 hour period and if i cant express this much (which i doubt) then to look to start combination feeding but as a last resort only..

I have got a 200ml ready to use pack of aptamil, cow and gate and a 250ml of SMA extra hungry milk. So looks like were going to have to open these early.

800 ml seems like a bit much to me. My LO is 2 months and all I've read/been told was she should be taking ~24oz (720ml) in 24 hrs. I'd say pump as much as you can and keep putting baby to breast. You're doing great hun!

eta: I don't think you should give her hungry baby milk - I think it's heavy and will weigh on her little tummy

Thanks cutie had a big cry today very trired and emotional.

Yes we thought that was a bit much.

We have 40ml of breast milk left as she had 60ml ah 4pm and have prepared 4 bottles now 2 x 20ml breast milk & 2 x 60ml formula husband is going to feed her breast milk and has ordered me to bed for a rest. Will express more when I get up if she will not latch for her night time feeds.

Not sleeping well not eating well and liquids are down just don't feel right today and worried about coping on my own. Husband goes back to work Monday got people who can come down and stay but not the same as husband. Thankfully I am on post pregnancy multi vits or god knows how bad I would be.

got up to feed baby earlier and having expressed a little from each breast tried to latch baby on both nipples and she was having none of it. Have expressed for over 10 min and only got about 25ml from each breast which i dont think is great give the midwife is sayin 80 ml per feed (if feeding 10 times in 24 hours).

Noticed the milk is white now rather than that creamy gold colour i presume this is normal and wonder if this is why the baby has gone off the breast maybe she does not like this change?

Running total last 24 hours 7 dirty nappies and 2 wet nappy...
