Bf and infant gaviscon

Today I was prescribed infant gaviscon for James and the doctor said to make it up in water but I don't really want to give him water. Does anyone else mix it with expressed breast milk? If so how much? I was thinking I could just mix it up as with ff babies they add it to the milk, but it says to add it to about 15ml of water but for ff it's not less than 225ml and my lo doesn't even take that much plus i'm not sure if u could pump that three times a day!

Hi Pinkclaire - our LO is on it and we've done it occasionally in EBM - just 15-20ml, so the same amount as if it was water and he seemed to be ok with that. It was easier to get him to take it in milk as well as he didn't like the taste for a while!

Contradicting myself here(!) but lately we have tended to give it more in water instead - it made him pretty constipated so I went back to water to try and ease things up on that front! I'd try it in milk first though and see how you get on. Good luck - hope it helps LO x

hi pinkclaire - yep after 3 days he stopped arching his back in pain and barely threw up a drop! a few days in tho, he started throwing up again but not half as much as previously and he's not in pain with it anymore. he still seems like he can't take big quantities of milk at a time, so he's better with smaller and more frequent feeds.

another tip - sometimes its hard to get him to take the gav at the end of the feed as he's so sozzled from his milk! - so hv said you can do it before as long as you feed immediately afterwards. i have to see which works best each feed as likewise if he's crying for food, often he won't entertain drinking gaviscon before milk!

hope it helps your LO - reflux can be so hard. r u seeing any improvement yet? you've probably seen other ladies on here whose babies r on ranitidine or domperidone - i dont think gav works for all babies, so dont despair if LO does need to try something else x
