I say past a year too, here it's recommended to nurse for the first year (even though the WHO says 2) and past that year is considered "extended" here

I agree with past 12 months for Western societies as it is unusual to go that long. It would be longer for societies were "extended" BFing is the norm.

I also agree that lots of ppl consider past 6 months "extended" but I don't like calling that extended as it implies 6 months is all the longer a baby "needs" to BFed, which isn't true.

In answer to the original question though, i personally think extended is beyond 2 years because of the WHO recommendation...but i am sure that most people asked would say that extended was beyond 6 months or beyond 1 year.

I have always thought past twelve months was extended BFing as well.

Feel bad for all you ladies who aren't getting good bf support!!!
I automatically think of "extended" bf as anything past 2 years. Most people I know only bf for a year though. I plan to bf for a year, then still a feed before bed after that if it is what LO wants to do. I won't go beyond 2 years though.

xx

I think beyond 2 is extended.

My son is going to be 1 next week and I cannot imagine stopping now he still needs his milk during the day, feeds through the night, and isnt walking --just starting to crawl. So yeah he still feels like a baby to me and I dont see continuing on past a year as extended. I may have had a different answer a year ago before I had a baby though.
