How long does it take to defrost frozen breast milk?

Just wondering how long it takes to defrost? I'm pumping and freezing but don't have a clue how long it would take. Lol. x

It does depend on what container you're using but in the bags you can defrost it under running (cold) water in a couple of minutes.

If I don't need it straightaway I put it in a bowl of water which takes about an hour.

Or I put it in the fridge and it takes about 12 hours.

Once it's defrosted it's good in the fridge for another 24 hours.

I like bags...that way you can lay them on their side and it takes up less room. Everyone has their own preference though

I don't think you should microwave breastmilk?
I normally take mine out in the morning and stick the bag in a bowl of cold water in the fridge for the evening feed

I also have read not to microwave, but I can't remember why...

I move mine to a bowl in the fridge overnight. I like bags better also.

You're not supposed to microwave it, partly because the microwaves kill off the antibodies and partly becajse you can get uneven heating so your baby might get a scald when the rest of the milk feels cool, but sometimes there really isn't an alternative! The thing to remembre is if you're microwaving in the bag, open the bag first, otherwise it explodes! I find that microwaving is fine as long as you stop when the milk's barely warm: if you go on till it's hot, which is easy to do if you aren't paying attention, it tastes peculiar.

If it does kill off the goodness in breastmilk, then I see a need to stop microwaving, but I don't really buy the uneven warming part, although I've read it everywhere... don't we stir the heck out of the milk before serving anyways, and test it like crazy on our wrists/tongues?
