is it possible to BF too much?

my little guy is almost 6 weeks old and easily 12lbs - his birth weight was 8lbs 15 oz and at his 2 week appointment he was 9lbs 15oz. He seems to be hungry all the time, to the point where sometimes I have to top up with formula (normally just an oz or so) because he gets frustrated that there is no milk left (I check by pumping, and get nothing) is it at all possible that he's eating too much?

the amount you pump is not an indication of how much milk is in your breasts.
it is not possible to breastfeed "too much".
from what you have described he sounds very healthy.

so if I pump and get nothing, he can still feed and get something? what should I do when he's crying and frustrated and keeps ripping off my nipple because he isn't getting anything?

glad to know though, I wasn't too worried, just wanted to make sure thank you

My boy does the same thing, usually with him it's wind so I take him off, wind him and change his nappy and try again x

Yup - I've only ever been able to feed on one side - she could wake sometimes after I'd just expressed to what I thought was "empty" but she'd still be swallowing and I'd still feel letdowns!

Most babies have a 6 week growth spurt. He will be hungry and frustrated for a day or two, but if you let him feed as often as he wants (no top ups) then your boobs will catch up.

Perhaps he's struggling whilst on the breast because he has got wind? Try winding him and putting him back on! Poppy had put on 3 pounds by the time she was six weeks old and she is exclusively breast fed

Yep, as others have said, keep feeding on demand without top ups and your supply will catch up. In the first months that will happen quite a lot! Sometimes they pull off because the flow is too slow, but milk is constantly being produced.

My Rubie is the same. Eats like a trooper, gaining weight fantasticly (right chubby chops now. Lol) but some times fusses like that. With her it's always one of the following, milk flow too fast/slow, wind or her reflux.
