How often do you swap boobs???

Bizarre title, but couldn't think of a way to write it that made sense

If bubs has a decent feed (15-20 mins) off 1 boob, and less than an hour an half later is rooting for more, do you offer the same boob, or on to the other one?? Don't want her getting too much fore milk.

Evie is only 3 days old, and can take anywhere from 5 min to 20 min feeds, when is the cut off so to speak, that you use the other boob at the next feed???

Hope this makes sense, sleep deprivation is ruining my brain power

My GP told me that most babies get 90% of what they need in the first 10 minutes. So I guess if the feed was longer than 10 - 15 mins then offer the other side.

You need to be happy she's drained that boob entirely and how long that takes depends on how she's feeding and how strong your letdown is! With breastmilk there is the foremilk which is very watery and designed to quench her thirst and then the hindmilk comes through - this is the thicker milk where all the calories are! You'll find that some mums have their hind milk coming through after 5 mins and others after 15-20, so it really vaires..

One thing you probably would be worth trying - the oxytocin which is released in your breastmilk (the one that makes you go owwwwwwww with tummy contractions at first!) will make her very sleepy and quite often a baby will roll off a boob punch drunk and go to sleep - but then wake up half an hour to an hour later going Oh, I don't think I was full, pudding please! Try waking her a little either by tickling her feet/hands or even going the full hog and doing a nappy change midfeed instead of before hand (and catch that midfeed poo therefore!) which might wake her up enough to have a full feed..

There is always the train of thought that a baby who feeds more than 2 hourly isn't having enough at each feed (not that your supply isn't there, just that the baby for some reason isn't taking it) but I know our daughter used to bob on and off becuase of her being in a sling - she was just a grazing feeder who fed little and often! I can only bf on one side though so I can't help you personally on when I swapped because I never did, lol!

As Sunflower says, it varies. LO will let you know, and when your milk settles you'll be able to feel if one boob is way more empty.

You won't do any harm by swapping if LO took a 10+ min feed.

I found, once H's poos got through to 'normal' they started to become less regular and green and mucusy... if that happens it's usually too much foremilk (swapping too often) I have to do at least 2 feeds / 30+ mins before offering the other side.

HTH

Generally if hes fed for a good 10 minutes (hes efficient, at less than a week Id give it a good 20+ minutes) and its been more than an hour from his last feed I will use the other side. If he fed for less time and didnt want to go back on at the time I would reoffer the same side, if its been less than an hour then I will reoffer the same side. I also feed him off the same side when I have just pumped (like just now infact!) as it helps kick my supply up the backside but he will go and feed off the other side as well afterwards and then I will pump that side AFTER he has fed....

I'm the same as rah. Or I was when I first had rubie. If it was over 1hr since her last feed I give her the other boob but before that I put her on the same. Thats what our health visitor adviced me to do anyway because that way you can be sure baby has got enough of the filling hind milk and not loads of fore milk. You'll soon be able to tell when your ready to change boobs tho as baby really drains them and you can feel the differance. Rubie now drains my boob in 10-20mins and one looks way bigger than the other. Lol. x
