buying sterilising equipment?

Hi there ladies,
I'm in 3rd tri at the moment but just thinking ahead for when LO has arrived - and I'm a complete newbie. I'm planning to solely BF. Would I still be wise to invest in a steriliser? Hubby thinks the sterilising tablets / fluid will do the same job and it'll be cheaper, so if I needed to FF or wanted to sterilise dummies I could use that. What has your experience shown you? Thanks for your help

I got the Tommee Tippee microwave and cold water steriliser because I knew we were going to also bottle feed ebm. If that's not something you've decided on though I wouldn't bother. Your DH is right that some sterilising tablets and a big bowl will do exactly the same job and will be way cheaper if you're not going to be doing it often

Thanks . I got a bottle of sterilising fluid in Asda. I might just wait then and see how I get on. i guess if I find I need to sterilise more often then I can still get a steriliser. x

I too got the tommee tippee micro/cold water and only ever use the cold water method. I breast feed however lo is on colic drops that have to be mixed with a little ebm before feeding so we use it for the little mixing pots and bottles. If the Asda baby event is on before you deliver they have them on offer for £10 or they are in Argos for £13.49 x

We are exclusively BF with occasional expressing so only have a few bits and bobs to sterilise every few days. I got an Avent steam steriliser and to be honest it's not that great - it seems to need de-scaling and cleaning all the time and you need to leave things for ages to cool down after it's fnished. Also some things don't cope that well with steam sterlisation - I have had to replace my breast pump funnel after the rubber gave up the ghost!

I would go for cold water sterilisation to start with, and see how you get on.

I bf but also pump for Dad to do one feed in the evening so I have to sterilise my pump and bottles. I've just got cold water Milton fluid in a large Tupperware box. I didn't even bother buying a "special" bucket and it works brilliantly.
I would just get cold water equipment and if you find later down the line you want an electric one then buy it then. Shops are open 24/7 anyway so you'll never be waiting long to get one if you find you really need it.

My Avent electric steam steriliser has just given up the ghost, so I'm down to using the TT microwave as a cold water steriliser.

Do you all wash the dummies / bottles / whatever with boiling water when you taken them out of the fluid? They don't half pong otherwise, but that strikes me as a bit of a faff.
