weight - again....and poo

Hi All,

DD lost some weight last week - I was reassured by all you lovely ladies, and also by my GP (she had to go in to check her ear infection had cleared up)

GP did say to double check she wasn't losing anymore, and if there was any concern - to bring her in.

WELL, she's been pooing a bit more frequently, and it's quite smelly and runny. She otherwise seems fine - just seems to be straining a lot. Could be teething - as she is chewing things like crazy, and dribbling LOTS. Lots of extra saliva. Any other ideas?

So, we weighed her earlier (I wouldn't have done, but wanted to double check it hadn't gone down)...and her weight is static. Again. That means since 21st Feb, her weight has not gone up. It's ever so slightly less. Am concerned this means she won't double her birth weight within the six months.

Should we be worried at this point? Or is this still sounding ok?

Is it time to be concerned? Anyone been in similar positions?

I don't really want to take her to baby clinic this week, as last time she came back with the ear infection....and the time before with a cold I could always take her to see GP (who was quite disparaging about the HVs at clinic!)

Hey hon

The poos and dribbling etc does sound like teething to me. It's great that she hasn't lost anymore weight this week. It might be that she's been using calories to get over the ear infection? Personally I'd wait until next week and weigh her again at home. If you're concerned at all at that stage, take her back to the GP rather than the HV, he seems pretty sensible!

As for doubling the birth weight by 6 months, that one stressed me out no end She finally doubled when she was 8 months old

Hiya Hun, if you are concerned then I would take her to your GP. That is what they are there for and will give you greater peace of mind than going to the HV. I'm sure there is nothing to worry about but you are better going to see the Dr and hearing that than sitting wondering and stressing about it for ages. Perhaps her weight being static is related to her teething as you have mentioned, perhaps she is putting all that energy into developing her brain and has paused in the weight gain for a little while, your GP may have other reasons for it as well.

Also, I wouldn't worry about her not doubling her weight by 6months, that is just a guideline, all babies are different and gain weight at different rates. You are keeping a close eye on her so she is a lucky little girl

thank you, ladies

I feel much better - as per - when reading these responses.

Maybe it is the teething or ear infection!

I'll weigh her again next week, and then act if needed. GP mentioned giving it a week, and that was later last week...so if no change, I'll definitely call him then. He was happy with her size last week. Like you both say, will def see GP and not HV - to be honest, I think half my worry stems from HV and their obsession with charts etc.

Thanks also for the guidance regarding doubling weight. Phew!

Wow, it's SO hard not to worry, isn't it?!

Just to add my baby had two ear infections one after the other and his weight gain dropped from 5-6 oz a week to less than 2oz. Am hoping he picks up again now but not counting on it as he is almost certainly now teething.

thanks - hope he's better

Bit of a mare, isn't it, that they have ear ache...and then teething kicks in? DD has been chewing anything and everything. I put a muslin in the freezer, she liked that!

Sounds like teething to me. It can also effect how much a baby will eat, if your mouth is hurting you don't want to eat either. Try not to worry about doubling of birth weight, all babies are different.
