Baby Led Weaning - Gill Rapley and a few thoughts aired

Thank you so much ladies for bringing my attention to this book. I really want Elliott to move on to solids of his own accord when he's ready but didn't know how to go about baby led weaning.

I have just ordered this book from Amazon and am looking forward to it arriving.

Lately so many people have been pushing and pushing the idea of weaning upon me and I am so tired of it The idea of feeding wallpaper paste (baby rice) and sugar filled rusks to Elliott is so not appealing and at the moment he is a happy, thriving baby on my milk alone. His weight dropped a few weeks ago on the centile chart (I believe he was having a growth spurt) and I was slightly worried though this week he is back up again (between 25th and 50th) and has gained loads (now weighing 14lb 3oz) so gggooooo booby juice

I truely believed when I was pregnant that breastfeeding was the norm and formula feeding was a bit alienated. HOWEVER, I could not have been more wrong. I really believed that I was going to be inundated with support but it is so sad how few people breastfeed. Most of the time, I feel like the outsider as I have not got a bottle of forumla in Elliott's mouth!! As time goes on though the stronger I am getting and after coming this far I am not going to stop willingly (unless there is a huge problem that would put Elliott's health at risk).

I try and go to my local Latch-On group every week and love to chat to the other bf Mum's and share advice and experience.

Breastfeeding my son is the best choice I have ever made.xx

I have it ordered too

All the weaning talk is driving me mad

I haven't been to any groups other than the village playgroup... besides being exceedingly tired, I've been a bit nervous other places will talk baby rice at me

I need to get my hands on a copy of that too

If for no other reason than so i can bat people with it every time they say the words "baby rice"

Seriously though, i want to have a read of it as OH and i are interested in doing BLW and i don't think i know enough about it to come across as confident when people ask me about it (which they do all the time at the minute, along the lines of- "when are you going to feed that baby?!" type thing!)

The banana test!

When your child can sit up unaided, peel a banana and hand it to him. If he's "ready" he'll put it in his mouth and eat it. If he's not ready, he won't!

I think it's the same book I got - a good one, but mostly it just underlines your own instincts and common sense: eat and offer healthy meals, include your baby at mealtimes, let them work it out on their own by watching, copying and experimenting, prepare for lots of mess at first, know the difference between gagging and choking and always sit near and supervise "just in case". There; I've just saved you the cost of the book

a fantastic reason in itself to buy this book (and one of my own reasons in fact!). I also want to have the knowledge to back up my BLW decisions when people irritate me with the "solid food chat". I'm hoping this book will help me to do so.

Thanks madasa, that's really helpful. Sometimes I don't go by my own instinct through lack of confidence so I'm hoping the book will help with this. However, I should have more faith in myself.xx

We BLW and it is awesome!

Expect to get LOADS of comments and criticism up until you have been BLWing for at least a month or two... which generally means until LO is 7-8 months old. You just have to learn to ignore it and stick to what you want for your baby. I have found that once LO starts really eating well, and then a former skeptic sees it in action, they are impressed and finally fully on board.

I have heard of that banana test before. I think I have found (as lots of other moms) that bananas are actually really hard for babies to start out with. They are too slippery. Otter is an expert eater for his age and still struggles to master a banana. He loves them, though!

Try steamed veg at first... carrot sticks, sweet potato, etc. When they can sit unaided, pick the food up, put it in their mouth and gum it, they are ready.

Definitely read the book before starting, though!

The one thing I am concerned about is leaving LO with anyone who doesn't agree with or fully appreciate blw... If I got home afterwards to find out they had given LO baby rice, I'm worried about what I might say or do....
