Too much water is bad?

Hi guys,

I've read on two separate posts here that having TOO much water in the day can be detrimental to breastfeeding. Is this true and if so in what way is it supposed to be bad?

I always feel I get a let down within a few seconds of downing a lot of water Does it make my milk too watery or something?

I had a nice long chat with a friend of mine whos from sweden where BF is very popular, shes on her 4th child and shes BF all for up to 2 years at a time and when getting tips from her for BF she said drinks lots of water! It worked for her and all her cildren are so healthy so she must have been doing something right

i had about 5 or 6 litres the other day so wanted to know why.

Yes it can, if you start drinking more than 3 litres a day on a regular basis it can have a negative effect on potassium levels which may negatively impact supply. However dont panic if youve had more on a few occasion, its a long term problem not a few days one! I drink around 3 litres a day everyday and I am producing enough milk to feed two....so no worries

So the thing is.... I've cut down to three litres a day and I'm simply not producing enough milk or as much as I have been drinking closer to 5 or 6 litres.

Any more info on why too much water can be bad?

Having a low milk production day today and will be over doing the water this weekend as I have Baby's weigh in on monday.

I drink 5 or 6 liters also. I feel I have low/borderline supply, but due to other reasons, not water. If I drink less, supply is even lower.

If you feel you need the water then drink it. I would perhaps have a word with your GP if it seems you need to drink that much every day. I cant really see it being a problem but best to get the medical opinion.
