green poo

louie has been doing some green poos for the last few days, he usually poos 2-3 times a day and theres at least one nasty green one in there :/
its really getting frustrating now, ive tried to research it, and understand that it could be an imbalance of fore/hind milk and have tried to get him to feed for longer on one breast as to increase his intake of the hind milk, but this is to no avail
last night i tried to express before i fed him, to relieve the fore milk, still getting green poos

can anyone else give me any insight, my HV is coming on friday so will definitely bring it up then, but is there anything else i can try to rectify the situation in the meantime?

Most people mw/hv will not be worried, it can be a fore/hind milk inbalance in which block feeding should help. Or i have found that it can simply be becuase they are ill or a bad tummy. It should pass in awhile fingers crossed x

How long are you feeding from each side before swapping?

Poppy had green poo for about a week and i was obsessing over whether she was getting enough hind milk. It was at the same time as she had thrush and disappeared with the thrush, so perhaps your baby is feeling a bit poorly? I'dask your HV at clinic if it's still a problem then

I had the same situation a month ago. I went mental obsessing so much about the fore/hind milk situation. My hv told me not to worry about it.

I also improved my breastfeeding patterns encouraging Sini to eat as much as possible from each breast. Her poos returned to their mustardy colour, but smelled very acidic! She is a very windy baby and suffers from colic, thus we get those greenish poos every now and then. For instance, she's been having them again for the past two days, yet she had her first jabs two days ago.

Just keep an eye on that and wait for your the feedback from your hv.

thanks all of you for your reassurance
i dont feed him for less than 10 mins on either side, but he usually takes at least 15-20 mins, and then i offer him the next breast but he doesnt usually take it, sometimes he will have an extra 5 mins on the next side

If sticking to one side hasn't solved the issue, you could try 'block nursing'.
  • Start with 2-3 hours and increase in half-hour increments if needed.
  • Do not restrict nursing at all, but any time that baby needs to nurse simply keep putting baby back to the same side during that time period.
  • If the second side becomes uncomfortable, express a little milk until you're more comfortable and then use cool compresses - aim for expressing less milk each time until you are comfortable without expressing milk.
  • In more extreme cases, mom may need to experiment a bit with time periods over 4 hours to find the amount of time per breast that works best.

It's actually totally normal and not always indicative of a problem. Molly still gets this sometimes and she's not in any discomfort. Basically, unless frothy, foul smelling, occurring more than 10 x per day or your baby seems to be uncomfortable... all breast fed babies poops should be considered normal.
