Mastitis - how to avoid lancing any tips?

Hi

I have been BF-ing my twins for four weeks - unfortuntalty I had to stop this week as I have mastitus - GP told me I couldnt get rid of it with medication strong enough that was safe to take for the boys. I have three or four 'tumours/lumps' that are in danger of needing lancing. Now a hospital stay is the last thing i need so I wondered if anyone had ideas?

I am expressing but only getting about 70ml per session from both which isnt clearing the lumps. eekkkk

xxxxxxxx

Oh its such a shame that you were advised to stop feeding! The best thing for clearing these lumps (i think they are blocked ducts) is to get your little ones feeding! I had some great advice from LLL about mastitus, and their tips are heat, rest and empty breast. Heat from the shower is so soothing, i also lay a hot water bottle on them when i am not in the shower. They recommend you go to bed and rest as much as you can cause your body needs time to recover. Your babies are the best at emptying your boobs so this is the best way of emptying them. Can you start them feeding again? I was given medication which was fine for feeding, so there must be some out there. Maybe you could try going to another doctor? However, you could try hand expressing the excess whilst massaging the lumps towards your nipple. These are just my experiences as i am not an expert but calling someone like LLL would probably be of great benefit. Good luck!

Oh I can't believe they told you to stop feeding! The best thing to do is to feed as much as possible is different positions to help drain the breast. I had it several times. I would always take a shower and massage the knot, it hurts like hell, but you have to just grit your teeth and work it out. Then I would do a warm caster oil compress with a heating pad and stay in bed with my son and let him nurse off that side as often as I could. I would also up my vit C intake.
