My son went from the 9th centile to the 0.4th... He is now tracking the 0.4th-2nd centile lines & is doing just fine. Like the other's have said, try expressing after each feed & top up with that if necessary. To help my LO gain weight, we put him on a 2hr feeding scedule, regardless of what time of day it was or how r4ecently he'd fed & stopped offering both boobs & just kept him on the one boob, using breast compressions & tactics like stimulation (talking, rubbing feet, bright lights etc) to keep him feeding a awake rather than falling alseep all the time. Aftr just 2 weeks, I really noticed a difference. I have since gone back to just feeding on demand & he is still gaining weight steadliy, is happy, healthy & the Dr keeps telling me to STOP worrying, lol.
If you are at all concerned, book a Dr appointment to put your mind at ease.

Just to clarify: Will eating more calorific foods help her gain weight?

When LO is having a growth spurt, I usually express in the mornings to help up the supply as the other ladies have said. I also take brewers yeast and eat lots of oats (both good for production) - I actually bake them into cookies. I eat a ton of these!

I also find that I need to make sure I am drinking and eating enough. I am struggling to get back to my pre-preg weight, but it is difficult since bf takes so many calories - I feel like I am eating all the time! What has helped me is eating tons of nuts (and I mean LOTS) - I eat congee every day and load it up with nuts LOL, and toast a handful of almonds to put on my salads. Nuts are high calorie, but tons of nutrition - especially good fats for your body and LO! High stress can also mess with supply, but I am sure its hard not to stress when you are worried about LO.

Also, my little guy never ate for more than 10 min at a time and I offer 1 breast per feed so he empties the boob completely. But all babies are different and eat for different times.

Don't know if this post was much help, but lots of hugs

xx

Edit: To question above, for me if I don't eat enough calories or drink enough water it does mess with my supply and LO doesn't get enough!

no in that your milk will not gain calories, yes in that it will help your supply. amongst other things that PPs have said.

Firstly massive

Noah lost 13% body weight after birth and then took a good 4-6 weeks to regain to birth weight. He's still small (on the 9th percentile and was on the 2nd up until 2 weeks ago)

Id say when baby is feeding are they swallowing? then you can see if its just comfort suckling. I massage boobs as I feed to help let down. If Noah starts to nod off or get too cosy I tickle his feet or behind his neck and gently blowing on his face perks him up and he sucks harder.

A pump will never get out what a baby can get out, our bodies are designed to respond to baby. So dont worry about what you can pump it will be less than baby is getting off you.

In regards to poos Noah was doing loads then he went 5-6 days with no poo I was really worried but mw said just keep feeding as nappies were wet and he eventually poo'd.

I noticed you said you dont change many nappies as you use pampers, Noah wont feed as well if he has a wet nappy so a change mid feed may help. I usually change Noah before every feed so at the moment its every 3 hours (not time time) When he was your babies age I still changed before every feed unless he was cluster feeding but I didnt leave a nappy longer than 4 hours (it made him grumpy)

Sorry if this is all rambling just trying to think what I did

oh yes drink lots of water but dont go crazy on it, too much water can actually make you poorly. Try eating foods with oats in (ie flapjack) I also take fenugreek.

good luck and dont feel forced to use formula as soemone said you can express and top up with that after a feed, its hard work but well worth it.

Expressing volumes are not an indication of how much milk you produce for LO

I believed eating more/higher calorie food was beneficial.
I just listened to my body... and my body said cheese, cake, sweets, rice, pasta, oats, chocolate.

If the dirty nappies have disappeared it could be a sign that LO isn't getting enough hindmilk. Are the ones you are getting mustard colour? brown or green?

To try and get the dirty nappies more regular you could try feeding more often from one side before changing to the other - especially if feeds are frequent.

Can you find a good book/film and just cuddle up for a marathon nursing session?

I always find H gets fussy and we get irregular dirty nappies after a growth spurt.

Calm down, for a start your baby has not lost any weight, just not put on loads. Do you feel she is growing, awake, happy, healthy? Mother's instinct is usually right, and if (ignoring the weight issue) you feel she is getting enough then she probably is.

There is far too much emphasis placed on weight gain, you need to look at the whole baby as stated above combined with wet nappies.

Remember that there are a number of factors that can influence the scales including - when the baby was last fed, if they have just had a wee or a poo, what time of day it is, which scales are used etc.

Kaya was a slow weight gainer but I actually stopped seeing the HV because I KNEW that she was getting enough, despite what the scales said, and I was right she's just very petite. We actually got a set of digital bathroom scales so we could roughly keep track of her weight and once I weighed her before and after a feed and she had put on a pound!

Thanks!

My body has lost all appetite although I ate like I'd never eaten before when I got back from the doctors last night. I'm definitely buying me some cake today. I've had a fair amount of cheese and rice the rest are foreign to me at the mo.

Also: She brings up milk a lot, how do I know that is or is not the problem?

I KNOW i shouldn't get stressed but I woke up last night and tried sleeping for an hour and a half but couldn't. I hate my brain. FINally drifted off.

Well, I don't know... I usually eat very well and LO has been gaining 10oz per week on average. Last week I noticed I was snacking less and LO gained only 5oz so... who knows. Probably the change in diet affected my supply more than anything but, when my supply has been best and her weight gain the most I was a chocaholic! You do need to be eating well to BF well. They recommend 500 extra calories per day.

I wouldn't worry about percentiles and charts, they were devised by formula companies... keep BF, eat better and see how you go. I have Molly weighed every week.
