Rant: Tongue tied,, I KNEW I was right...

Phoenix is 1 month old today and every single day so far has been a battle to remain BF'ing,
When he was born he wouldn't latch and I was told that he was 'lazy' and that he would perk up... he didn't and almost ended up in special care. To stop this from happening we had to FF. During the time in hosp I was told twice,, by a BF'ing consultant in the delivery room directly after he was born, and the following day before discharge by the Ped, thathe wasn't tounge tied.
In the following days we continued struggling with latching and I started to think he may actually have a tounge tie. I did a heap of reading up about it, looked up you tube clips and pictures on line and was convinced I was right. ~I asked 3 seperate MW's on their home visits if he did and each one told me no. That he was still just 'lazy' at the breast. I fifured they were the professionals and must know best.

Feeding wise we have gotten from only bottle of both FF and EBM, to majority bottle and very small feeds from the breast using shields, to mjority breast feeds using shields and top ups with bottle, to finally no shields, 1 or two bttles a day and the rest BF'ing. It's been f**ken hard and many times I've almost given up...

Today I manage to get down to our local BF'ing clinic to get help with his latch that I still wasn't happy with,, only for her to take one look in his mouth and declare that not only DOES he have a tounge tie... but its a 90% tounge tie and actually quite severe!!!!! She was amazed we'd gotten this far and is surprised he can latch on at all. I have been given an immediate referral to the TT clinic for the operation to get it snipped and fixed and she's even trying to get me a spot tomorrow as the clinic only runs on Tues.

I can't believe I've gone through 4 wks of stress, tears and almost giving up BF'ing for something that I KNEW was wrong on day one...

This is why docs etc should listen to mums more often, mothers instinct is almost always right

So sorry to hear they messed you about! The midwife who came to see us a day after he was born (and is a BFing counsellor) told me straight away that he had a tongue tie (I was clueless & just thought breastfeeding was meant to be painful and difficult) and we got booked in for the following Tuesday (like you, that's the only day they do clinic). Knowing it could be fixed was the only thing that got me through the pain of breastfeeding for that week, I can't imagine doing it for a month - well done you for perservering and I'm glad they're finally sorting it out for you!

This is what is going to get me through the next week if they can't get me in for tomorrow!
Did it make a big difference once your LO had it cut?

Oh my God yes!! Like I said, I'd just assumed breastfeeding was supposed to be painful and never ending but that fact is that it was never ending because he couldn't get enough milk, he was fussy, permanently attached to the boob, it was horrible, I was like "is this motherhood!? What have I done?!" Then we went in to hospital for it to be snipped and they brought him back to me (I got admitted so OH took him off to the clinic) and he just latched straight on, it was so different, I could barely feel him. They also had infant feeding specialists there to help and check that it had made a difference. Since then breastfeeding has been painless (apart from when he bites and causes me damage!!) and I always kick off to my OH when people on TV talk about it hurting as it doesn't for us now.

Aww Kota, i'm so sorry it's taken this long for someone to actually listen to you! But so glad that someone finally has You've done brilliantly to get to the point you're at now with no help so hopefully once he's had the TT sorted it will be a much smoother ride for you both from here on
