Hi ladies.
Well my LO is 6 days old. It's been some week, had to have an emergency section.
All was OK until the third night and I went all through the night feeding and feeding, getting more and more frustrated with trying to get the latch right. The next morning I was distraught, I was going to have to wait at least another day for my milk and LO was starting to look like a Simpson and I asked for formula. Felt ridiculously guilty. When hubby arrived in I had a total break down.
So anyway as I needed for LO to get rid of the jaundice I agreed to formula top ups along with BF. There was a lactation consultant on the ward so I wandered down the hall in bits and just broke down to her. She was frigging amazing, was able to calm me right down and told me I would get there. She gave me the resolve not to feel guilty about the formula (oh man I think it's disgusting stuff) and to take time with LO to work on latch and positioning overnight, spent hours in the BF room calmly relatching until I got him feeding.
Next morning my milk was in so I asked to go home as I was feeling much more relaxed. First night at home was good except LO was a bit overwhelmed with the new milk and threw up in his basket! Last night was tough, all night feeding, no sleeping at all! So this morning I looked up everything I could about latch and position to see what I was missing. First I looked at a tutorial on lying down feeding and had our first 100% painfree feed where LO was effectively feeding! Woo!
Then figured I wasn't adequately supporting my breast at latch on. Had a couple of goes at it and holy moly the difference, my nipples are already healing up! LO doesn't know himself either he's weeing like no tomorrow and pooing the right poos and *gasp* sleeping!
Last of his jaundice is almost gone now and I'm feeling positive about him gaining weight for the next health visit.
Even if he doesn't want to sleep tonight at least if the feeding doesn't hurt it will be a huge improvement!
I have to say though, BF my be natural but that doesn't mean it's easy, it's a crazy steep learning curve!
