How many times will you need to express while at work (once or twice), do you work 5 days a week ... I ask because some electric pumps are designed for "occasional use" (e.g. the Medela Mini) and some for incredibly regular use (such as the hospital grade double pumps). Also, is time spent pumping going to be an issue at work - emptying two boobs together (double pumping) is quicker than doing each boob in turn.

I wouldn't recommend purchasing an electric double pump unless (1) money is not a problem or (2) you intend using it more often than just at work. Probably something like the Medela Swing would be best, it's slower as it's single but still pretty robust.

The Medela website (might be the US version rather than ours) has a table that suggests suitable models based on expected usage.

Last couple of questions - do you have somewhere private to go to pump at work, and do you have somewhere suitable (i.e. fridge) to store the EBM after pumping before you go home. Just things to think about.

Im at work for 12 hours a day monday thru friday, we have a special room here to allow for us to pump. So I plan on pumping 3 to 4 times to begin with and go from there base on milk production

Sounds like "serious" expressing then - perhaps a Medela double pump would then be appropriate? I think the break-even point between renting and buying works out at about 3 months - if you intend to go longer than 3 months, then buying is better value; under that time, and renting is better value.

I'd be intrigued to know how much Medela charge for renting pumps in the US, as the price strikes me as rather high here in the UK (certainly out of my price range - I'm having to manage with a Swing).

Medela swing is great!

The use of double pump depends on the size of your breasts. If your boobs are huge like mine (38 GG) then it will be difficult to express from both sides at the same time. I have to hold the boob with one hand while expressing and the pump is in the other.

I work full time and pump 2-3 times per day as a result. I have the Ameda Purely Yours double electric. It's been great. The Medela is supposed to be great, too.

The important part is to get a good, electric, double pump. Expect to spend about $200-300 on it new. Plus extra parts, bottles, etc.

I have also found the medela pump wipes very useful for work pumping. And the medela steam sterilizing microwave bags. As for as storage, I like the Lanishnoh Mommy's Milk bags best. I pump into bottles, then transfer to the bags.
