Expressed milk - silly question

I am looking to start expressing my milk soon, however i have a few questions...

firstly i have a medela swing pump but tommee tippee bottles (as well as the one medela bottle which comes with the pump) can i transfer the milk between the 2 bottles if i sterilise both as the tommee tippee dont fit the pump and i'd prefer to use these as they are anti colic.

secondly can the medela swing be put in the tommee tippee electric steriliser.

and finally when is the best time to pump milk?

(1) Yes, you can decant from one bottle into the other, so long as both are clean! I used to express into 50ml bottles on each boob (double pump) and then decant both into one 100ml bottle for freezing.

(2) Obviously only certain bits can go in the steriliser - the horns & valves. Not the motor section! There is some debate as to whether to sterilise the tubes, I personally don't, but others do.

(3) Can't help as I'm pumping 6 times a day (exclusive expresser).

Sorry to be so cheeky but can I also hijack your thread to ask how you heat up the milk once it has been stored in the fridge? Do you just stand the bottle in boiling water, and for how long? I am about to start expressing too, I only have a hand pump though so hope I can get some out! Good luck, hope it works out for you as well polly. x

Best time to pump is inbetween babies feeds according to my HV your boob have started producing the new milk as soon as baby has finished a feed and will do the same once you have finished expressing.

As for heating up treat it as any normal formula milk, they advise hot water and shake. I used the microwave and shake method myself.

Hi!

I use the Medela Swing pump and Tommee Tippee bottles. I actually express my milk in to bags and then transfer to the bottles when needed. The bags take up less space when storing and are easy to freeze and then defrost.

I sterilise my pump but not all of it! The only parts that should go in the sterilliser are the parts that come in to contact with your boob and milk. I do not sterilise the air tube or motor parts.

I have a Tommee Tippee microwave steriliser but use it as a cold water steriliser most of the time. You can put your Medela pump in the TT sterilliser but will just have to shuffle it around so it fits in. . Hope this helps.xx

I forgot to add....I sometimes pump on the opposite boob to the one I am feeding on. If I do this when Elliott is feeding I usually manage to get a decent amount of milk. I find this a handful to do though lol!!

I will sometimes give Elliott formula so when he has this I will express so that my body does not miss the feed.

I seem to be fairly full at night so guess this would be a good time to do it...however, I haven't yet as catching up on rest is more inviting lol!xx

I defrost my milk in a jug of boiling water. It's easy and safest this way. I find it only takes about 5 minutes max to defrost. Test the
milk on your wrist before you use it though as the boiling water can make it too hot quite quickly.xx

Heating the milk ... if I'm downstairs, then it's in the microwave (and a damn good shake afterwards to distribute the heat); if I'm upstairs (overnight) then it's in a jug of really hot tap water, left to heat whilst I change his nappy.
