Plugged Milk Duct - Very Painful

I just noticed today that I have what seems to be a plugged duct in one of my breast which has become rather painful. The blockage seems to extend from the areola back toward the wall of the chest and is quite lumpy and painful tot he touch.

I have been trying to my lil one to nurse on that side to relieve it but because of the slow milk flow she fusses and refuses to stay on that side. I've tried applying warm compresses and pumping that side today. Is there anything else I can do to relieve it? It's become rather painful and I'm worried that it will escalate into mastitis.

it is really important you get the milk moving. Apply hot flannel or hot water bottle to affected area before feeding and express a little to get milk flowing before putting LO to boob. As expressing orfeeding, massage area to push milk along If you start feeling unwell, with fluey type symptomssee Dr asap. Hope it gets better soon.

Thanks ladies, I am slowly noticing a difference. The lumps are softening and the tenderness is easing.

I noticed plugged ducts decrease milk supply. My breast is supper soft and flat!! Will my milk supply return soon after the ducts have clearded? I am hoping that despite still breastfeeding it did not cause my milk to dry up.

No, don't worry it should come back to normal. Carrying on with the feeding is the best thing to do. I found Ibuprofen helped with the lumps I had too.

It worked well for me to take a hot shower and sorta squeeze the milk out while in the shower, I felt like a cow but it was worth it The advice you already got worked well too, apply heat, pump etc ..

The milk supply will return

The docs recommended it cos I was a bit worried about taking it at first. Plus Wobbles researched loads for me (dunno if she remembers this) but first time it happened to me I was on hols in Northumberland getting panicky. She surfed the net and came back with a load of things to try. Superstar!
