Need Help: Breastfeeding a premature baby

Please help:

I can not get Noah to latch on. He will latch on suck maybe 2 times, then scream and fight by pulling away etc. Ive run out of milk...so by Monday I will have to give him formula, which Im scared to do because he had a NEC scare in the NICU after getting formula. I hold him in the football hold only way I can even get him on even for a second. He's so small, and my breast is so large. Any ideas on what to do?

I thought haveing him home would increase my supply but it hasn't...

Have you tried to feed him whilst lying down? That might be a good position if you've got huge boobs to help him get established with the feeding.

Have you seen a bf counsellor? I really think you need to to discuss some options. If you feel your milk supply is low and that he is getting upset because there's no milk then there's something called piggy back feeding where you have some formula/expressed milk with a long thin tube going from that into the corner of the baby's mouth whilst you latch them on to you so they suckle at your breast but get the milk from the other source - this helps to stimulate your supply.
Have you been advised to pump a lot during the day/take supplements to help your supply?
Also try feeding him when he's sleepy and not really hungry, does he have a pacifier?

Try not to get too down, he's only small and he has to learn how to breastfeed - it might take some time but He will do it and these troubling times will be a long distant memory.

he might be gettig impatient as the milkis coming straight way -perhaps pumping a little before a feed so your milkflow is going might help.

this might be nothing, but also check his mouth. If he ispullingoff he might have thrush in his mouth which is making it sore to feed

good luck with it all hun

Get hold of a lactation consultant asap!!! They do amazing things, speak to the doctors and nurses in NICU about seeing one.
