We give it to him when he's fed but can't settle himself at night. He seems to get bad wind and sucking a dummy seems to help him. We try and take it out as soon as he stops sucking on it or when he's really calmed down.

The first night we gave it to him, every time it fell out he woke up and cried so we had to keep putting it back in so we try and take it off him before that happens.

I mentioned it to my HV and she said if you're happy that your breastfeeding is established then it shouldn't cause confusion, and like the other ladies said, the HV pointed out that they don't get any milk from a dummy. Plus, if you're giving LO a bottle once a day, and they're still taking your boob then it shouldn't be a problem with a dummy?
This is what happened to us too, after struggling for about a week to get him to take a dummy, when he finally took it at about 5 weeks old, it was a complete nightmare. OH put his foot down and we went cold turkey on the dummy and he hasn't had one since.

Unlike many other mums commented on here, Jack is nearly 10 weeks old & doesnt have a dummy. I have been breastfeeding since birth & havent really wanted him to have one, much to the surprise of all my family, who say "Ooh you should give him a dummy". So to the pressure of my family, I tried giving Jack a dummy a few times when he has been upset & he refuses to take a dummy. My brother said to me that he was impressed that Jack didnt need a dummy, so i'm quite pleased that he doesnt want one.

Thanks girls!

We've decided that he can have it if he really needs it but not for every sleep/every time he cries. Will see how we get on!

We never wanted Reg to have a dummy..but we use it when we go out (He wants to constantly feed/suck because of his reflux) If we cant get anywhere to feed him we pop the dummy in and he is fine...any other time he will not take one - he's like..there is noooo food coming out of here mummy! And out it fires!!

They say that dummies are meant to help prevent SIDS and also soothe infant reflux as the saliva neutralises the acids

Xx

La will very occasionally (and only recently) take one - it seems your attitude towards it is sensible, so go for it! It isn't a magic cure with La but sometimes helps her to drop off from being very sleepy.

Daisy started having a dummy a few days ago and it has really helped to settle her.
