PS - I think we've managed to turn our single Swing pump into a double pump, I've tested it once but I'm not sure how it'll stand up to multiple use
How did you do that? I'd love a double pump ... have toyed with the idea of hiring a symphony but it's so expensive ...

The Ameda Lactaline/Purely Yours has no chance of any milk getting into the motor as the Medela ones do. That said, I have had a Medela second hand and used it with no qualms.

The main reason I didn't get second hand again this time is that, especially with Medelas, the motors tend to break down or suck in milk and stop working as well after a relatively short time and you don't know how long the seller used it for. The Medelas for instance only have a 3 month warranty for the motor... my second hand one has stopped working so well very quickly, so I got new this time for that reason.

I guess that is what they are implying (and they are quoting the FDA guidance at the bottom) but I didn't think HIV could survive outside of the body for very long at all, let alone in a warm pump motor.

Seems incredibly OTT....
Also, wildly inaccurate.

I have a medela pump so it's not really an issue but I really have my reservations about the accuracy of all this.

I disagree - I think it must be a theoretical possibility. HIV/Hepatitis are very extreme examples though and would require the purchaser to be very lax on the hygiene front. I'd say it's far more likely that if you were to get anything, it would be something like Thrush that sterillisation won't necessarily kill. However, as pretty much everyone on this thread has said, the sensible thing to do is replace everything but the motor and the risks are miniscule for open system pumps.

I had no idea so many of you woud have bought second hand though. Is it still cost effective when you have relaced the pump kit?

I have bought second-hand twice (a Mini & a Swing) and, yes thanks to eBay, it worked out much cheaper. But then I didn't have to buy new shields & tubes, as I got these from the NICU when baby was still there.

I say wildly inaccurate on the HIV suggestion. The rest, I'm sceptical.

When I bought my breast pump, I was told not to share it because it can transmit HIV. So I'd rather not risk it.....

Ugh, this is ridiculous... like the belief that you can catch it from toilet seats and kissing people. You cannot get HIV this way.

I got a used one and just got new tubing for it. The hospital pumps get passed around (with new tubing of course).
