Suddenly gone off right boob

Hi girls

Need some advice please. My LO Katie seems to have gone off my right boob!!! 3 times since yesterday she has been on in for a couple of minutes then comes off & has a tantrum/cries, and WILL NOT go back on it, yet if I put her on left straight away she's fine. Thing is I've got a blister on my left nipple as 2 nights in a row she has been sucking it for over an hour, so I really don't want her on the left any more than is needed. Why would she suddenly start doing this??? I'm worried something is going wrong with the supply in my right boob.

There have been times in between these episodes tho that she has had the right boob no problem. Do you think it might be because she's full of a cold? Maybe sometimes her nose gets too blocked up lying that way??? I might try her in the rugby hold. I did think this morning it could have been cos the milk was coming out too fast as she hadn't been on the right one since the night before (although that doesn't normally bother her), but she did it tonight as well when she'd emptied it a few hrs earlier.

Hi!

i am sure that it isnt a supply issue. if that was the case it would affect both your boobs.

It may well be that she is full of a cold and is uncomfy on that side. she might even be sore on one side - has she had any vaccinations recently?. and sometimes they just go off one for a while, mine did (and still does at 21 months!) at times. I can understand how frustrating it must be if you are getting sore on the 'good side'.

Like you said, trying a diff. position could help. Have you had any pain or soreness on the side she wont feed from? sometimes you can get blocked ducts near the nipple that can affect their ability to latch on.

The most important thing to remember is that one boob is more than capable of nourishing a baby, so dont panic if you cant get her back on to having both for a little while. Just relax and take your time, ok? If you stress about it then she will be stressed and its less likely to happen. Skin to skin contact is fantastic for encouraging them to feed: just strip her down to her nappy and yourself from the waist up, and just lay with her in bed and relax. dont try to feed her. just make it available and she may well just latch on all by herself

I am a trained peer supporter for La Leche League, so if you ever need any info or support i am only a PM away and would love to help. Good luck <3

oh, and also: expressing just a little off the right side before attempting to feed might help if you think she is being overwhelmed by the amount of milk that spurts out.

No she's not had any jabs lately (got that pleasure next week!) The more I think about it the more I think it's cos of her cold. She's just come off left & is now on right & is very happy there.

Could the cold be developing into an ear infection? Sometimes that can put them off one side for a while. Does it get better if you give baby calpol? Little babies can get snuffly - their nasal passages are so small. The generic remedies - eucyluptus oil, tilting a cot slightly, lots of hot baths - might help.

If you're uncomfortable on the right, it's really important to express on that side. If there's a build up of milk, it could develop to a blocked duct or mastitis; and mastitis can put babies off because the milk can taste a bit salty, and so the problem can get even worse.

HTH

She kicked off again last night so I changed her to the rugby hold & she was fine, so it's definitely something about lying that way. She's not rubbing her ear or anything but I'm gonna google signs of ear infection now then I can keep my eye on it. Her cold is starting to clear up now so fingers crossed she'll be better soon.

We have some saline drops for her, have put a wedge in her crib & put some decongestion stuff (I think it's called karvel) on a hanky near her crib. She also has some cough medicine that the doc prescribed but whenever I give it her it just ends up dribbling out the side of her mouth!!!
