Not gaining weight

Emma was weighed today and has not put on any weight in the last 2 weeks. Her weight gain has been patchy since birth. Clinic were not too worried and said as long as not a loss it is fine but I feel concerned now.

Em was 5 lb 13 at birth.

She is 23 weeks now and is 13 lbs 3.

All advice and comments needed.

Thanks

Hi hon

I've had alot of weight gain issues since Aisling was about 4 months old. At 23 weeks, she weighed 14lb1oz but then she was born at 8lb15oz so a bit heavier than your little girl! Aisling pretty much didn't gain any weight between 16 weeks and 26 weeks at it was only at the 23 week mark that we were senst to the GP. Even then, they were happy to see that she was happy and well, had enough wet and dirty nappies and was generally well in herself.

How has her weight been over the past few weeks? I'd say try not to worry if you can, you'll know in yourself if there's something wrong

She gained 6 and half 2 weeks ago and fortnight before was about 4. She has loads of wet nappies but dirty another matter. Em was on gaviscon since 3 weeks which made her poo every day or 2, Came off that 2 weeks ago and had normal poo then started 1 baby rice a day as I coulnt keep up with feeding and pooing infrequently again.

She is so bright and alert. I just keep thinking we would know if she was hungry surely? Just another thing to worry about!

That sounds like really good weight gain to me, certainly better than ours! Don't worry about the dirty nappies, it's always a bit hit and miss with breastfeeding. I agree with you, if she was hungry, you'd know about it. Sounds like you're doing great!

Wet nappies are a good sign of enough foremilk, but the dirty nappy count indicates whether or not she is getting the high-fat hindmilk which will really boost her weight gain. http://www.mother-2-mother.com/mothe...s.htm#Foremilk

There's a good guide for improving weight gain in breastfed babies here: http://www.iwantmymum.com/site/artic...tfed-babies/52
