I have the exact same problem with my daughter. She's only 5 days old, but she also keeps falling asleep during feedings and it's impossible to wake her up. I had a C-section though, so I'm hoping it's just the after-effect of the drugs she's been exposed to. Otherwise, I might have to investigate supplementing. However, I'd really like to avoid giving her a bottle as her latching technique is still not perfect.

You are doing so good to give it a shot! The first two months are pretty hard, but it is so worth it to stick it out! Try changing the baby's diaper before you feed. If she falls asleep, take her off. If she really just wants to comfort suck, give her a paci. If you want to keep giving her a bottle, try pumping with a medela pump, they are great! The first two months feel like you are a dairy cow, but she will work out a schedule soon. I think it is so worth it to keep breast feeding though.
my son used to fall asleep "at the table" so one day I laid down for a nap and let him nurse while I slept. I woke up 3 hours later. He was still on! My breast hurt, but he was happy and had a very full belly.
Try to do what feels right to you and the baby and enjoy the one on one time you get to have together! it will go by so fast. Best wishes!

Patrick was a really "sucky" baby when he was little and mw told me that some babies just have a constant urge to suckle (even when not feeding). I ended up giving him a dummy at 2 weeks and this helped immensely.

P used to drop off a lot, especially night feeds. I did all of the above - strip off, flick ear, blow on face, tickle. One method that worked best for me was to unlatch him and put him down - this used to wake him up and we would get going again - i sometimes had to repeat several times to get a decent amount down him. If LO is v sleepy though still best to get it checked with HV/MW/GP to reassure yourself.

The more the baby suckles though, the more milk you will produce. Its still early days and your milk production is still building - its very very normal for babies to want to feed around the clock for long periods of time at the beginning. Not easy for us poor sleep deprived mums but I can promise that it does get better and relatively quickly.

If you you have a round the clock feeder (which it sounds like you do), and if you can, just sod off everything else, cleaning, cooking etc (can your DH deal with these things or family?) and just get comfy in bed or on the sofa, bundle up with LO with the remote control, dvd box set of choice or a good book and a glass of water to hand and just concentrate on the feeding. It will be great bonding time for you and LO *thinks wistfully through rose tinted specs of many hours with LO before he learned to poke me in the eye and pull my hair*. Not everyone can do this or want to so no right or wrongs about it but it is all part of the BF journey.

It sounds like you are doing amazingly though

It's normal I'm afraid but persevere and it'll get better. I'd suggest you ditch the formula too so your supply will regulate itself.

And, why it's so very important to avoid FF in the early post partum period: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/2/T023200.asp

Best of luck....
