Dear Clarabella
You poor, poor thing! Oh, it sounds like agony at the moment! There's a good set of articles on nursing newborns here: http://www.llli.org/NB/NBearlyweeks.html and I hope that you'll find something that relates specifically to your situation. Just a thought - sometimes babys with tongue tie have difficulties opening their mouths. Holding him close, skin to skin, will help too, as will biological nurturing: http://www.biologicalnurturing.com/p...ite-locked.pdf

Would it help to remind yourself why you are doing this? A bit of positive thinking? You are giving your baby the most fantastic gift: http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/general.html.

And any time it feels like it's getting a bit too much (and it can get so overwhelming in the early weeks) you can always call a Counsellor: 0300 100 0212.

Blessings to you

Melanie

Big

I know it's easy to say... but last week was so different to this week, and next week will be different again.

I took as many hot baths as I could fit in to ease my rock solid boobs, and used breast shells to let milk leak off aswell.

This week LO has started feeding something crazy and has made the rocks a thing of the past

I hope it eases up for you in the next few days hon xx

Personally, I needed to see a specialist. She was a life send. But once I got myself expressed, I had gone a few days and my supply went down. So we are supplementing with some formula. DS needs about 10 ounces of formula for what I lack, but hopefully my supply will get back up.

We got him back on by putting a little bit of formula on me then having him attached. Took a few tries, but he latched within minutes. Then I pump after a feeding and supplement with the breast milk first then formula if needed. So far, this works for us, but I did a good amount of crying for three days when I couldn't get him to latch or suck. Try to stick with it, you aren't a failure and if you do decide to formula feed, it isn't the end of the world either!

Note: We own a pump, but needed to rent a hospital grade one from the specialist. Maybe your MW or children's ped (which is where we got ours) has one you can rent. This is how I expressed when I was rock hard after a few days!

It's what the specialist had me do. It felt so much better after that and we did five minutes per side for 20 minutes total, then we breastfed using the little bit of formula on the nip. It worked for me, but everyone is different!!!

Ditto! The Lactation Consultant told me to ease engorgement, pump enough just to ease the discomfort but not to empty your boobs, as if you empty them it will encourage more milk supply making the problem worse.

I had a cracked nipple from poor latch in the first week, i borrowed a pump from the mw and used that till it healed. It only took a couple of days as i constantly used Lansinoh cream, which was a god sent. Expensive but soooo worth it. It does get better, it may not feel like it now but it will. Like everone else has sed, u have to do whats best, happy mum happy baby! heres another x
