Biting

Olivia is biting me during every feed at the moment and it really hurts. Her two bottom teeth have just come through and she is biting me at least twice during every feed.

She just seems to be biting randomly, it is at different times during every feed and she bites and pulls my nipple at the same time

Does anyone have any advice to help stop this or is it just a phase??

Biting is a really common, but fortunatly temporary, problem! And it really, really hurts!!! It's a bit like stubbing your toe: overwhelming pain, but it fades. There are some fantastic ideas for overcoming it here: http://www.llli.org/FAQ/bite.html
and here: http://www.llli.org/FAQ/teeth.html .

Both of my children have bitten me while feeding, but luckily it hasn't meant the end of the breastfeeding relationship. It was a hurdle, though!!! And it did hurt!

Mums who decide to wean because of biting need to be very careful to reduce feeds gradually to avoid plugged ducts and mastitis; and that may well mean that in reality the biting phase is over well before the milk dries up; so in fact, they can carry on feeding....

I know trying not to react is hard. But, the more you make of it they will think it a game. uh oh... hmmm? The other thing I have been told is to remove her feeding each time she does it. Then she will associate feeding ending with biting... personally my lil guy would bite when he was already done feeding... so not sure it would work well then.
