I'm worried I'm not making enough!

Breastfeeding Ozzie has been going really well until today. He's spent the whole day grumpy and constantly feeding. I am worrying that he's not giving me time to replace what he's having. He's been having so much that I've had 6 pooey nappies today compared to his normal two.

He's just nodded off, much to his disgust. He does keep waking though desperate to suck on something and I know he's going to be up all night doing the same.

Is there anything I can do? I'm tempted to give him some formula to fill him up but I don't want to unless I really have to.

Sounds like a growth spurt love. They are frustrating, but won't last too long. It will take a few days for your boobs to catch up to him, but they will. He is just working to get them to make more milk! Quite clever of babies and boobies really. I know you have other LOs, do you have a sling you can nurse in?

Typical growth spurts occur at 10 days, 3 weeks and 6 weeks old. I wouldnt worry about. He is doing it so your body knows to up your supply. It will level off in a day or two. It is tiring but try to sleep when he does on those days.

He could also be having silent reflux. Google it for symptoms.

This definately sounds like a growth spurt. LO is working hard to build up your supply. If you want to stick with breastfeeding, try to avoid formula during this important time, or your breasts won't get enough signals to produce more. Find a cozy spot to cuddle up with him and just get through this phase... it won't last long!

I think most of us worry that we're not making enough milk at some point. It's a worry, partly because it's so important, and partly because we can't actually see it and so have to work on a trust principle - trust ourselves, trust our bodies, trust our babies. Sometimes though that worry is justified, and mum isn't making enough; so it's important to assess weight gain; it's easy to check what comes out and that gives you a good idea how much has gone in. There's a good guide to making more milk here: http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/supply.html

Weight gain isn't that important. As long as your LO isn't losing weight, some gain according to the charts, others go a little slower. The main thing is wet and dirty nappies.

Growth spurts can be demanding but they pass quickly enough

Thank you

After my panic last night he's been fine today. He's not actually really been awake today except to feed a couple of times this morning!

I have the health visitor around a lot and he gained 12oz last week! I was shocked, my little boy is growing up

I'm currently looking into swings and carriers but can't seem to find the perfect one

Defo sounds like a growth spurt. They are hard going though!! I still stress about not making enough, think I will until Emma is weaned to be honest!

I have had many many times where LO's feeding habits have gone all wacky for a bit and I doubt myself. I have always stuck it out and it turns out fine. Expect this to happen again... just don't give up!!

I had the most success with the Bjorn when Brenn was tiny. I could lower him down far enough, so his mouth was nipple level. I would get him latch on, toss a blanket over us and do the grocery shopping and no one ever noticed.
