Please Help - 3 days old - sleepy baby, not latching on

Hi - I am a very new mummy and need some help.

Baby has been feeding pretty well until today, but today she has been really sleepy, she is not asking for food and I have had to wake her to feed her. When I do wake her, she doesn't latch on easily, falls a sleep after about 10 mins and that's it for that session.

I'm getting increasingly frustrated and concerned. Do you think I need to be concerned? Has anyone else's baby had days like this?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

it's really scary when they're so new isn't it.
Is she having wet / dirty nappies?
Does she seem distressed otherwise?
If not, she just may be feeding effectively and tired chick.
She may well relatch later once she's had a mega nap

If you are still worried - ring your midwife, thats what they are there for

Thanks for replying...

Is she having wet / dirty nappies? A few wees and one poo today.
Does she seem distressed otherwise? No, she seems absolutely fine.

I have called the midwife on the labour ward and she has suggested trying again in 30 mins and if I'm still concerned call back. She did say that if we have to go back in, we have to go via A&E - which sounds like fun on a Saturday night!! I think I'd rather just persevere myself!

I find it very frustrating to try and not manage to do it.

Any hint or suggestions gratefully received.

Result - just had a good 20 minute feed, with the proper milk that has just come through. Quite a relief!

It's so worrying in the first few weeks isn't it?

As your milk comes in more she'll feed a little better and the worry will slowly subside.

Persevere with what you're doing and keep an eye out for wet/dirty nappies as this is the best way to know if a newborn is getting enough food. xx

Great! In future you can try undressing the baby when they fall asleep at the breast and/or changing their diaper to wake them up a bit. Skin to skin contact when feeding can help as well.

Glad to hear that baby had a good feed, Thomas was like that the first few days, I had to wake him for every feed and really work hard to keep him awake long enough to get some food into him. I'm sure things will improve though now your milk has come in. Just keep waking her at least every three hours for the moment.

is baby jaundiced at all? as this can make baby very sleepy, hosp/ mw can often forget to tell new mums, and they think they have a great baby that sleeps all the time, when actually they are so tired from the jandice that they dont feed properly.

good that a better feed was had, well done.
