Switching to formula?

Hi.

I've just posted in FF section but thought I'd start a thread here too. My LO is nearly 10 months and has been exclusively BF since birth. However, I've been advised by my doc to switch to formula but I have no idea where to start.

I'd really appreciate any advice about how to cut down breast feeds (she has 6 or 7 BFs per day still and eats 3 meals!) and I've no idea how much formula she should have or which formula to start her on - the only thing I do know is that I'll be trying to give it to her from a cup and not from a bottle.

I'm having a hard time with the prospect of not breast feeding her and want to make the transition from breast to formula as painless for us both as possible...

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Huge thanks in advance.

x

If you don't mind me asking, why are they saying you should switch?

If she has shown no allergies I would start with just a regular cow's milk formula....we have ones with DHA and ARA that are "closest" to breastmilk so if yall have something like that I'd look for that. I'd just start at like 4oz and see what she wants. My son got really sick at 10mo and refused to nurse so we ended up on formula and he only took 1-3oz at a time of formula even at 11+mo. Is it something you have to make the switch fully now? If not and you can slowly wean off I would start replacing one nursing session a day with formula and go from there

ETA you may also need someone else to offer the bottles at first because she will know you usually nurse her and it may make it harder for her to take the bottle from you

I'd be curious the reason the doc asked you to switch too? I know the American Pediatric Society recommends a full year of breastfeeding anyway, and the World Health Organization goes further to recommend two years. I personally breastfed til my son was 2. I couldn't really offer advice on formulas though, sorry! No formulas or bottles in my house, heh

I have PND and have managed not to go on to medication for the last 10 months but it's time to start. I don't want to give up breast feeding and wish I didn't have to. I fed my 1st until she was almost 15 months and I feel so guilty at the prospect of not giving this one the same amount of time.

each baby is different, my son took 2 formula straight away but my daughter would not take any type or formula from any type of bottle so ended up being breastfed til 19 months. she wouldnt even take expressed milk from a bottle. try a bottle that mimics the breast. if possible get some1 else 2 feed her so she doesnt smell your milk. good luck! formula guidelines r on the back of the packet but bear in mind they r guidelines and your baby may need more or less than is marked.

Oh No! Another underinformed GP!!!! It's awful how little our docs know about breastfeeding. It's almost never necessary to wean to take antidepressants. There's a link here: http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/...hale10-02.html

Many many mums find that the self esteem boost they get from breastfeeding has a wonderful impact on the PND - after all, breastfeeding is something to celebrate! And although PND impacts on both mum and baby, BFing helps protect both from some of the nastier effects. There's more info here: http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/pnd.html

Good luck.

Melanie
