Green poo

Nice subject! Our 5-week-old son has over the past two or three days gone from the classic "chicken korma" nappy to fluorescent green poo in every nappy - that's probably eight to ten bright green nappies a day. They're watery, but probably no more so than they've ever been. I am BF exclusively and I am fairly happy with our BF style and ability. Baby seems to be feeding the same as usual. I wouldn't say he seems unwell, except to say that he is sleeping a lot more than usual and is maybe slightly more cuddle-seeking than usual. Also, his colic seems to be getting heaps better (touch wood!).

Would you say there's anything of concern here? My worry is that we've given him an infection because we're using Colief drops - I express some milk, store it in the fridge and then use a syringe to give the milk containing the drops before each feed. We're sterilising the syringes etc., but I guess it's pretty easy to contaminate them.

I don't want to rush to the GP or call NHS Direct because I don't want them to give us their get-out clause of "quick, go to hospital" or "here, have these antibiotics" to cover their own backs rather than because they think there's something wrong.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Often it's a sign that baby is getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk (although there are other causes too I believe). Finlay had this and I did block feeding for a few days which seemed to sort it out.

Noah gets green poo when he snacks rather than takes a full feed. Often when he goes upto 2 hour feeds, when he does this I burb him when he's finished and get him reattached so he gets the hind milk.

The other girls said it. Green poo is a classic indicator that they are not draining the breast fully. If he doesnt feed for long, go back to the same side again at the next feed

It's either:
- diet
- wind
- foremilk/hindmilk

and my health visitor has argued the case for underfeeding and overfeeding too.

I've never found an explanation but we have had at least one a day for the last 2-3 months and he's thriving so I don't worry anymore
