Why Sterilize?

Is it really important to sterilize the pump and bottles before I use them everytime. I sterilized them when they were first new but do I have to sterilize them before each use? I never sterilize my nipples and he drinks from those and they touch my bra which is washed with everything from underware to other dirty clothes, and I use breastpads which means milk sits against my skin souring. I do sterilize the bottles occasionally but mostly I just wash them really well. Is this ok?

I just go by the directions that came with my pump. I sterilized it when I opened it, then it says hot soapy water is ok if you clean it right after use. I do sterilize once a week though, since my DH isn't always great at cleaning them right away.

I sterilise mine at least once a day. I leave it in the fridge in between.

It's not normally necessary to steralise when expressing for an older baby: http://breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/pumpsug.html

Obviously a prem/newborn/sick/small baby needs extra precautions, but an older crawling baby is putting all sorts into their mouth.... and somewhere in between, there's a balance to be struck! Even milk banks (for prem babes) accept putting pumps through the dishwasher.
