Anyone let their newborn naturally feed themselves successfully?

I went to an NCT breastfeeding class and the woman really encouraged the idea of the newborn being laid on the chest/stomach and being given freedom to roam and find the nipple and she said baby will feed itself.

I think that's AWESOMELY amazing that any baby does that even though we see it in the natural world but seems all a bit too easy if that makes sense.

Wanted to hear from those who tried this method and what happened when they did.

Thanks!

Emma also learned to find it on her own at a very early age. I co-sleep and in the early days she'd sleep across my chest so we could get as much skin-to-skin as possible. She'd root her little head around until she found it and just open her mouth huge until she got it. There were times I'd be asleep and be startled awake because she'd latch on in the middle of the night. Needless to say, she rolled over at quite an early age at 2 months on the dot and I'm thinking it is partly from all those nights of sleeping on her tummy while on my chest.

We did!

He latched on soon after birth himself.....and then about 5 weeks in we had issues latching on (I had really bad thrush and as I knew it would hurt when he went on I wasn't quick enough when he was gaping wide and we were both very frustrated!) I spoke to an NCT supporter on the phone and she suggested biological nurturing to get us back on track. Lots of skin on skin and encourage the baby to find the nipple and do it all himself.

Almost became our party trick! Amazing to watch, nature is so clever :-)
