Expressed milk-which pump and bottles etc?

Hi ladies,

I was wondering if you can give me some advice based on your experiences?

I plan to breastfeed my baby, but I would also like to express for the added convenience and so my husband can do some feeds. I'm just finding the vast amount of choice with regards to brands of pumps, bottles, sterilizers etc a little overwhelming.

After reading lots of reviews I'm thinking of buying the medela swing breast pump (as I don't find spending a little extra on an electric pump). Does anyone us this brand? If so, would they recommend it?

Also, I was wondering which brands of bottles etc people find best for combination feeding?

Thanks in advance for any responses!

x

Hi Brouwer,

I've heard great things about the Swing, although I've not tried it myself. It seems to be very popular though, and I know Medela make very good products.

As for bottles, it depends on the baby! I'd say just to get one bottle of any type, in case LO doesn't take to it. You don't want to be stuck with 6 bottles that LO won't use! Maybe get one wide neck one like an Avent, and one narrow bottle? There are also breastflow ones and the Tommee Tippee Closer To Nature ones. Personally, I used the Avent ones with no problems, but it does depend on the lo.

I used a cold water steriliser (milton tabs take 15 minutes), this method is good if only using occasional. You can get tubs that can be used either as a microwave or cold water steriliser, I think these are good. I tried an electric one but couldn't get used to it.

Congrats on the pregnancy, looking forward to seeing you in here when LO arrives.

I have got the Medela mini electric breast pump & have been happy with it.

Agree with other post, Medela is a good make. The hospitals use them.

I got mine off Ebay. Its no different to using the breast pumps in hospital, being used by other mums.

I've got a selection of different bottles - Avent & Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature.

I also have a cold water steraliser & use Milton because it only takes 15 mins & you dont have to rinse the items. I find this method very convenient.

I have the medla swing breast pump and I love it!!! I can get a full 5oz bottle in about 10 minutes of pumping. I use glass bottles with it because I think they are safer than plastic.
