Breast feeding and formula feeding?

Hey girls

Just need some advise really

When xmas comes around we will have a full house of people and baby will only be a few days old, I am really wanting to breastfeed but as the house will be full of people, i was wondering should i formula feed just for the day, ill feel dead unconfortable breastfeeding infront of people and worried that expressing wont work?

I mean would there be any problems with this?
Will it make babys tummy upset?

thanks for looking

The iron in the formula may cause constipation... Every baby bf or ff gets colick though so you never know.

Can you just excuse yourslef and find somewhere quiet?

At such an early age, actual bf'ing would be best to avoid nipple confusion (my lactation consultant advised against bottle nipples and pacifiers for the first 3 weeks--but that is ideal and not always practical). I would definitely try to give him expressed milk if you do use a bottle. You might even want to take a pump with you to the hospital/birthing center to start expressing right away--that way you can start building up your supply. I started pumping as soon as my milk came in. It also helped relieve my engorgement. But if you do end up using formula, it's not the end of the world. Baby might just have a few funky diapers

I would say BF only if possible. My son was given formula in the hospital due to low birth weight...by bottle and finger feeding, he's never managed to latch on and I have to exclusively pump! I'm not saying for sure this is why he didn't latch...I'll never know. But just lock yourself in a room, and watch the tele with your baby. I guarantee you'll enjoy the excuse to run off and hide just you and him/her. In the beginning and even now I still struggle to get my son back when we visit family....drives me crazy!!

Why can't you just go to your bedroom and tell everyone your feeding the baby so you won't be disturbed? That's what I did when I lived with my mum and we had visitors. No one ever bothered me.

I would try excusing myself in that position to, means you get cuddles alone with baby. And your not having to share your baby with visitors while you are feeding. But if you do have to give the odd forumla it won't hurt!

You might find you are more relaxed about feeding in front of ppl than you think, I never though I would be able to do it - but it never bothered me. *hugs*

If you do not feed or pump during the day. I think you would be risking supply problems, aswell as possible pain from blocked ducts or mastitis. At such a young age, bottle preference and nipple confusion is a real risk. There is a lot of comfort nursing needed at that age, and there is also the risk of overfeeding.

If came to my desicion, i think ill just excuse myself as i was thinking this too, i dont want to confuse my baby by nipple and bottle and i defo dont want a few funky diapers.

I know that no matter what i defo want baby to have my breastmilk rather than formula. So if bf dont work out, expressing it is.

Thanks girls for all your help
