Electric is quicker, but manual is quieter. I've got a medela harmony (manual) a mini electric and a swing. I don't rate the swing much but I love my mini electric and my harmony and it just depends on how I feel as to what I use.

For the steriliser I use cold water steriliser for my pump parts. Firstly, steam/micro/boiling warps the horns of the pumps. Secondly it means that after each use I just give it a quick rinse out and chuck it back in the fluid ready for next time, no waiting for it to sterilise and then cool down. Just a quick wipe to dry the outside or more likely a flick over the sink and it's all ready.

Depending on how often you're going to pump, if it's each day I'd go for the electric as it's so much quicker. Funnily enough, I have the swinkg and think it's great but I didn't get on with the mini electric one! Couldn't get any milk out for some reason

I use a cold water steriliser too, for all the same reasons as angelstardust. I have the tommee tippee cold water one that doubles as a microwave one.

Good luck!

The swing is more expensive and has a stronger pump. It also has this function where it mimics the baby's short suck to start and then long suck once let down has happened. I don't think the electric does that. It plugs in so you don't have to worry about batteries. In my experience, it's more effective and alot quieter

The mini doesn't have the fast rythym to encourage let down, it's louder too.

Strangely, my mini is a lot more powerful than my swing! Which is why I am not impressed with the swing, it's wimpy lol.

However, assuming that my swing is just crap and a new one is more powerful, then it is a good pump, but I'd buy the harmony along with it. (or I'd buy a new swing and a harmony off ebay as the only bits you need you can sterilise fully and they don't come into contact with the milk)

The harmony is basically the manual bit for the swing and all parts are interchangeable. Also the harmony comes with a plastic horn.

Please tell me someone understands what I'm going on about because I have lost myself!

I've got the Medela swing and the Tomme Tippee steriliser. I use it in the microwave as once done, if left unopened, the stuff is sterile for 3 hours which was about the time I'd be expressing anyway.

I hate the smell of Milton so didn't want to cold sterilise.
