Buying bottles???? Advise needed from a newbie!

Hi guys,

As a first time expectant mum, I don't want to resort to FF if I start to feel tired or lazy or fed up. So I was wondering, if I needed to buy any bottles for the baby before it was born? And if so, how many?

Also, my OH thinks we should get some formula milk in just in case (God Forbid!!!) anything happens and I can't be around the baby and then he'll be stuck. (Him not having boobs of his own and all )

Advise and opinions please!!!!

Thanks in advance for your help!

i was given a microwave sterilizer and some bottles as a gift when i was pregs.
day2 home with bubs my milk hadn't come in and i wasnt producing any more colst.... (pre milky stuff!). thomas had been feeding for 5hrs straight and nothing. sent OH out for a carton of ready mixed formula at 4am, thankfully we had the bottles. he litterally had a drop then nodded off. and my milk came in the next day.
we now use the bottles with EBM, but tend to put most of it in the freezer for a later date than give him a bottle as he's very fussy.
we also keep a carton of formula in the house (50p from asda i think) just incase. have only needed to use it once since and that was due to some bad advice from a doctor.

I use the Gerber NUK bottles, Marley uses these ok, if someone else is feeding him they take the shape of Mothers breast when they suck, so its not so weird for them

Personally, I think that having things in 'just in case' can mean that at a weak moment, you give in and then struggle to maintain/establish breastfeeding.

There are a few times when I've been upset, exhausted and stressed, and I might have given formula had it been easily accessable. Having to wait till morning was a good thing for me, it meant I stuck at it, and realised that we could get through anything.

There are shops open every day of the week, and there aren't any 'emergencies' where you couldn't wait until the next day to get formula or bottles.

That said, some people are reassured by the option of having things handy.

That's what I'm scared of.

maybe I shoudl give 1 bottle and 1 carton to hubby to hide from me. Although I imagine if he sees me crying and begging for them he'll give in.

So did you not have ANY bottles when you gave birth?

I have bottles and formula on the advice of the midwife, but am afraid of them and hope never to use them!

I had some bottles because they came free with our steriliser and breast pump. I didn't have any formula and decided to get some on day 4 because I couldn't get her latched on. I think asacia is right that there aren't any emergencies really and it was fine for me not to have any formula in the house, it let me think longer about it. I don't know about your DH but mine would have done anything to help me in those first few days after the birth and I know he'd give me the formula!

Totally up to you, if you'd like to have the backup then obviously get it in now but baby won't suffer if you don't have it there as backup, there's always places you can get it if really necessary and it might make it that bit more difficult to give in like I did

If you have none you could just go to the shop if you need some and are less likely to just give in with b/feeding if you dont have a bottle to hand.

No bottles, no pump and no formula. In the end, I did have to pump and bottle feed, but OH nipped out to get them when we were sure it was the right thing to do - it was carefully thought out and not something done in a panic. I'm glad we did it that way, I was able to research my options, and I found out about expressing, so I did that. Had I had formula in, I think I might have given that. We now have a happy breastfeeding relationship and I'm so glad.

Instead of getting bottles, write down some phone numbers for if you need support. There is the NCT breastfeeding line, The Breastfeeding Network and my favourite, La Leche League.
